Matthew Joseph Korklan (born March 19, 1983 in St. Louis , Missouri ), better known by his current ring name Matt Sydal , is an American wrestler . During his career he was under contract with WWE , NJPW and ROH Wrestling , among others . Sydal is currently performing again in Impact Wrestling .

Wrestling career

Beginnings

Korklan was trained as a wrestler at the Gateway Championship Wrestling promotion and started his wrestling career in October 2000 with this promotion. In 2003, he won his first title in the Japanese Dragon Gate doctorate.

In the United States since 2003 he has mainly participated in the independent promotions IWA Mid-South Wrestling and Ring of Honor . There, too, he was allowed to hold titles. There Korklan was best known under the ring name Matt Sydal .

Korklan was also signed to the National Wrestling Alliance between 2004 and 2006 . Here, too, he was able to win titles.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2004-2005)

In 2003 and 2004, Korklan was under contract with the Total Nonstop Action Wrestling promotion . In November 2004, Korklan was fired from TNA.

Ring of Honor Wrestling (2004-2007)

Sydal made her debut in Ring of Honor in Reborn: Stage One on April 23, 2004, defeating Delirious.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2007-2013)

From spring 2008 Korklan was under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). First he appeared in the ECW roster . At Cyber ​​Sunday 2008 he had a title match for the ECW Championship against Matt Hardy, which he could not win. On June 29th, he switched to the RAW roster .

On September 27, 2010, Korklan tore his rotator cuff but did not have it operated on. As the pain got worse, he had to undergo an operation in October. To take him out of the current storyline , he was attacked by CM Punk after a match, which allegedly caused this injury.

On February 28, 2011, Korklan returned to RAW. Together with Kofi Kingston as Air Boom , he defeated David Otunga & Michael McGillicutty in RAW on August 22, 2011 and became the new WWE Tag Team Champion . On November 1, 2011, Korklan was suspended for 30 days for violating WWE's wellness policy. They lost the WWE Tag Team Championship on January 15, 2012 at a house show to Primo and Epico.

On January 17, 2012, WWE announced that it had suspended Korklan for 60 days for his second wellness policy violation. Shortly before the suspension expired, he broke his foot in a car accident and has since been out of action due to injury. After more than 2 years without performing, Korklan was released from the WWE on June 12, 2014.

Return to ROH Wrestling (2014-2017)

Sydal returned to Ring of Honor on September 27, 2014 , losing to AJ Styles .

New Japan Pro Wrestling (2015-2016)

On September 23, 2015, Sydal made his debut for NJPW at the Destruction in Okayaka event, where he fought with Hiroshi Tanahashi in a tag team match against Bad Luck Fale and Tama Tonga. On November 7th, Sydal and Ricochet defeated Roppongi Vice (Beretta and Rocky Romero) in the final at Power Struggle to win the 2015 Super Jr. Tag Tournament. On February 11 at The New Beginning in Osaka, Sydal and Ricochet defeated The Young Bucks and reDRagon (Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly ) in a triple threat match to become the new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions. On July 3rd, Sydal and Ricochet teamed up with Satoshi Kojima to beat The Elite for the NEVER Open 6-Man Tag Team Championship.

On September 25th, Sydal, Ricochet and Kojima were withdrawn from the NEVER Open 6 Man Tag Team Championship because Sydal did not appear at the planned title defense at the Destruction in Kobe event. Sydal missed two shows in three days. The official reason was that there were "travel problems". It was later revealed that he had actually been arrested on entry.

Return to impact wrestling (since 2017)

On April 27, 2017, Sydal returned to Impact Wrestling , defeating Trevor Lee in his first match. On November 10, 2017, Sydal defeated Ethan Carter III to win the Impact Grand Championship . On March 8, 2018, Sydal defeated Taiji Ishimori to win the Impact X Division Championship , which also included Sydal's Impact Grand Championship. He thus became a double champion. On March 29, Sydal lost the Impact Grand Championship to Austin Aries in a match that also included the Aries Impact World Championship . At the Slammiversary XVI event, Sydal defended his Impact X Division Championship against Brian Cage where he lost the title.
