Hiroshi Tanahashi (born November 13, 1976 ) is a Japanese wrestler who is currently active in New Japan Pro Wrestling . Tanahashi has been married since 2003 and has a son and a daughter.

Career

Prior to his wrestling career, Tanahashi played baseball. At Ritsumeikan University he then practiced Amaresu (a martial art). He made his debut against Shinya Makabe in 1999. In April 2003 he won the U-30 title in a tournament and became first champion. He held this title until January 2005, then toured the wrestling world until early 2006 to gain experience. At Final Resolution 2006 made his debut in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling with a loss to AJ Styles .

After a few defeats in 2006, however, he recovered relatively quickly with a number of individual wins and finally won the IWGP Heavyweight Title for the first time in July 2006. He should have taken that title from Brock Lesnar , but he refused to do the job and so he won the vacant belt in a tournament.
