The IWGP Intercontinental Championship (to German IWGP Intercontinental Championship ) is a wrestling title of New Japan Pro Wrestling . The abbreviation "IWGP" stands for International Wrestling Grand Prix . The title was introduced by NJPW on January 5, 2011 while touring the United States. The title is also being defended outside of Japan. As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .
history
The introduction took place during the NJPW Invasion Tour 2011: Attack on East Coast , which also took place on American soil. This tour also offered a stage to wrestlers who were not under permanent contract. On January 5, 2011 at Wrestle Kingdom V in Tokyo Dome , NJPW announced that the first title holder would be determined in a tournament that will take place on May 13, 14, and 15, 2011. On May 15, 2011 MVP was able to prevail in the final against Toru Yano and was crowned the first title holder.
