The IWGP Tag Team Championship (in German IWGP (International Wrestling Grand Prix) Team Championship ) is the highest wrestling title for tag teams at New Japan Pro Wrestling. The title has the status of a world championship, as it was also defended in the USA. As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline.

history

The IWGP Tag Team Championship was fought in a tournament on December 12, 1985 as part of a house show in Sendai . Kengo Kimura and Tatsumi Fujimani were able to win this to become the first titleholders. They defeated the then President Antonio Inoki and Seiji Sakaguchi in the final. Since then, the title of the tallest tag team title of the PhD is He gained over the years prestige and the status of a world championship when the title on June 14, 1991. WCW Clash of the Champions 15 - Knock Florida USA in Knoxville , Tennessee from the Steiner Brothers was defended against Hiroshi Hase and Masa Chono in the USA . But the title was not only defended in World Championship Wrestling, but also in the American promotion Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and the Mexican promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre.

Just like the highest title for individual wrestlers at New Japan, the IWGP Heavyweight Championship , the IWGP Tag Team Championship has not been spared controversy. On October 30, 2005, Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Masahiro Chono defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shinsuke Nakamura for their fifth title reign. However, the title was not defended for months, which is why New Japan introduced a provisional Tag Team title to fill the gap a little. On June 2, 2006 this was awarded to Wild Child, consisting of Manabu Nakanishi and Takao Ohiri, who won a three-way tag team match against Giant Bernand and Travis Tomko and Yuji Nagata and Naofumi Yamamato. On September 20, 2006, Masahiro Chono and Hiroyoshi Tenzan were revoked because of disputes on their team. As a result, Wild Child were awarded the title as provisional Tag Team Champions a week later on September 28, 2006.

Another controversy involved winning the British Invasion title, consisting of Brutus Magnus and Doug Williams. They won the IWGP Tag Team Championship at the tapings for the weekly TV show TNA Impact broadcast by Total Nonstop Action Wrestling on August 21, 2009 by Team 3D , consisting of Brother Ray and Brother Devon. But New Japan refused to recognize the title change and continued to list Team 3D as champions. Not until a week later did they declare the title change to be valid in an official press release and officially recognize British Invasion as IWGP Tag Team Champions.

Title holder

The current titleholders are Golden ☆ Ace , consisting of Kota Ibushi and Hiroshi Tanahashi , in their first reign as a tag team. They defeated the previous titleholders, the Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa) on February 21, 2020 at New Japan Road in Tokyo .
