Tony Christian Halme (born January 6, 1963 in Helsinki ; † January 8, 2010 , ibid) was a Finnish politician and former wrestler and professional boxer .

Career

Wrestling

Halme, who received his training as a wrestler at Verne Gagne , began his wrestling career under the name The Viking in the Universal Wrestling Federation . Then he went to Japan, where he was hired by Antonio Inoki for his promotion New Japan Pro Wrestling . He worked here for three years, but without getting past Leon White or Scott Norton in the role of the "bad giant from the west" . In 1993 he made his debut in the World Wrestling Federation in the role of the Finnish hater of America, Ludvig Borga , who was quickly placed in the top fight card and, among other things , was allowed to end Tatanka's two-year winning streak . After an injury break, he was no longer allowed to build on his previous successes and left the league again. In 1995 he had a few appearances in the German CWA before he turned to a boxing career after a short excursion into acting (with supporting roles in, among others, Die Hard: Now even more and American Tigers ).

Mixed martial arts

In October 1994 Halme appeared on a US tour of the Japanese Fighting Network RINGS and defeated the Georgian Tariel Bitsadze . This was his only success, because both at RINGS against the Dutchman Dirk Vrij (1995 and 1997) and the Japanese Mitsuya Nagai (1996), as well as at the US Ultimate Fighting Championship , where he had to give up after 56 seconds against Randy Couture , there were only defeats. So he concentrated more on boxing again.

Boxing

His career as a professional boxer began in June 1995 in Las Vegas, where he knocked out Bradford Powell in his last fight in the first round. In September 1996 he got the chance against Jukka Järvinen to box the vacant Finnish heavyweight championship and lost in the third round by disqualification. A year later he was able to knock Järvinen out in the first round and win the title. During the next title defense he had to take a technical knockout against Mika Kihlström in the 5th round.

His most prominent opponent was in April 1999 with the aging American Iran Barkley , whom he defeated on points in a fight for the vacant WBF Americas title. Already in the next fight there was a knockout loss against the Mexican Agustin Corpus in the third round.

The year 2000 was mixed for Halme. Although he managed to regain the Finnish championship title in April by a four-round knockout of Kihlström, in the fight for the vacant heavyweight championship of the NBA he was defeated in October by the French Yacine Kingbo in the second round. After three more fights, he ended his boxing career in late 2002. In total, he played 19 fights, of which he won 13.

politics

In March 2003, Halme, who had drawn attention to himself several times through anti-immigration statements, was elected to the Finnish parliament for the right-wing populist party True Finns with an unusually high number of 16,390 votes in the Helsinki constituency. There he attracted attention several times through controversial statements, such as homophobic insults against President Tarja Halonen . In July of the same year, in delirium caused by alcohol and other drugs, he fired in his apartment and was admitted to hospital. Since he was not allowed to wield the weapon and steroids were found during the search , he was sentenced in January 2004 to a suspended sentence of four months and a fine of 80 daily rates. In the 2007 parliamentary election, Halme did not run again.

death

Tony Halme was found dead on January 10, 2010 in his Helsinki apartment. He had committed suicide two days earlier.

Others

As a wrestler, Halme always appeared in high boots because he had SS runes tattooed on his calf .

In the third part of the "Die Hard" film series Die Hard: Now all the more Halme portrayed the terrorist novel.
