The United Service Organizations (USO) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the support and welfare of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

The foundation goes back to an initiative of the then President Franklin D. Roosevelt , so that on February 4, 1941 in New York the USO was decided by the American Congress. This amalgamation of the six civil charities Salvation Army , YMCA , YWCA , National Catholic Community Services , National Travelers Aid Association , National Jewish Welfare Board is supported to this day by the US Department of Defense and the President , who holds the honorary chairmanship.

Its task is to support the members of the military and their families in the context of troop support through performances by famous artists, excursions and short trips as well as numerous other offers of help. Many well-known artists such as Stephen Colbert , Marlene Dietrich , Bob Hope , Marilyn Monroe , Jessica Simpson , Henry Rollins and Robin Williams performed for the USO.

Today the USO operates around 120 "USO Centers" worldwide, which are used more than five million times a year by members of the armed forces and their family members.
