Jazmín Benítez (born November 17, 1980 in Waterbury , Connecticut ) is an American wrestler . She is currently under contract with the WWE and appears regularly on their show NXT .

Career

Beginnings

In November 2000, Mercedes Martinez began her wrestling training and was trained by Jason Knight. First experience she gained in Sheldon Goldberg's Promotion New England Championship Wrestling . Between 2003 and 2004 she competed in several New England promotions including Connecticut Championship Wrestling , Combat Zone Wrestling and IWA Mid South .

Shimmer

On November 6, 2005, Mercedes competed in the first show of the newly founded all-women wrestling league Shimmer . Her first fight against Sara Del Rey ended in a draw after 20 minutes by reaching the time limit just before she was able to pin Sara del Rey for a fisherman buster . Both wrestlers received standing ovations after the fight . In Shimmer Vol. 2 she was defeated by Sara del Rey in a four-way elimination match , in which Lacey and Daizee Haze also participated. After she had to admit defeat to Sara del Rey again in Vol. 5, Martinez was finally able to defeat Sara in Vol. As a result, she inflicted the first individual match defeat at Shimmer on Sara del Rey.

Due to an injury, Mercedes Martinez missed the recording of further Shimmer tapings and the tournament for the Shimmer Championship title. She only returned to Vol. 17 and after three victories in issue 20 was allowed to challenge the reigning Shimmer Champion MsChif, but was not allowed to win. After a few defeats and a few victories, she was able to record a winning streak of seven victories in a row and has been unbeaten since Shimmer Vol. 28.

Ring of Honor

Martinez made her debut in the Ring of Honor on March 25, 2006 , where she competed against fellow Shimmerers Allison Danger, Daizee Haze and Lacey. On December 22nd, she was injured in a match with her tag team partner Jimmy Jacobs against Haze and BJ Whitmer. In December 2007 she returned to ROH and joined the stable The Vulture Squad . She left ROH on May 27, 2008.

Independent leagues

Martinez entered the ChickFight IV tournament in April 2006 and made it to the finals before she was defeated by MsChif. On the same evening MsChif won a Falls Count Anywhere match against Martinez and cheerleader Melissa .

In the women's league Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU) Martinez initially formed a tag team with Angel Orsini from 2007. The initial partnership, however, developed into an intense feud from March 2008, which included a cage match on January 10, 2009 and a bull rope match on March 7, 2009 . In this match Martinez was able to win the WSU Championship. In another match, Martinez was finally able to defeat Orsini on June 6, 2009 in a 60 minute Iron Woman Match , which could only be decided after 70 minutes after 10 minutes of sudden death overtime.

Martinez also takes part in Jimmy Hart 's Wrestlicious Show under the name "Maria Toro" , where she embodies the gimmick of a bullfighter .

On February 6, 2010 she made her debut for NCW Femmes Fatales and was able to defeat Portia Perez with the Fisherman Buster.

World Wrestling Entertainment (since 2020)

In January 2020, Martinez signed a contract with the WWE for the first time . She made her NXT debut on January 15th in a # 1 Contenders Match for the NXT Women's Championship . Here, however, she was eliminated by Shyna Baszler . She took part in the Women's Royal Rumble Match, where she was eliminated by Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville . On February 5, Martinez defeated Kacy Catanzaro for her first NXT win . Since July 22nd, she has been accompanied by Robert Stone as manager.
