Matches for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship and the WWE Cruiserweight Championship were also scheduled. The main match was a no-holds-barred match between the Undertaker and Roman Reigns , in which the Undertaker suffered a defeat at WrestleMania for the second time . Brock Lesnar also became the new Universal Champion by defeating Bill Goldberg , making him the first to hold both the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship. Randy Orton won his ninth WWE Championship by defeating Bray Wyatt . The event was peppered as a surprise with the return of the Hardy Boyz to win the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship . It was the first WrestleMania to go past midnight.

background

The WrestleMania 33 took place in the Camping World Stadium , Orlando, Florida , instead.

The WrestleMania is regarded as the biggest event of the World Wrestling Entertainment and is considered the Super Bowl of sports entertainment. As the 33rd, WrestleMania was held for the third time in Florida after WrestleMania XXIV (2008) and WrestleMania XXVIII (2012). Tickets for the event were available from November 18, 2016, and cost between $ 38 and $ 2,130. Starting October 31, 2016, travel packages including accommodation ranging from $ 950 to $ 5,900 were also sold. A two-hour pre-show was held prior to the main event, the second hour of which was broadcast live on the USA Network on the WWE Network and on major social networks such as Facebook and YouTube . On February 20, 2017, it was announced that Raw's The New Day ( Big E , Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods ) would host WrestleMania 33.

The event was accompanied by four official theme songs:

At the start of WrestleMania 33, Tinashe appeared with America the Beautiful . During the big event, Pitbull sang with Stephen Marley Options and later Greenlight .

At the beginning of WrestleMania 32 in 2016, a match between Big Show and NBA star Shaquille O'Neal was announced in the media and through WWE . O'Neal was a surprise guest attendee at the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal , with he and Big Show getting into a confrontation. However, the other participants eliminated the two. At the 2016 ESPY Awards , Big Show and O'Neal had another brief argument. O'Neal was challenged by Big Show to a match at WrestleMania 33, which he accepted. In January 2017, both of them posted on social media preparing for the match. Big Show then began to have doubts about O'Neal's match. In late February, O'Neal announced that it didn't look like the match would take place, but if it did, he would continue training. The following week, O'Neal announced that negotiations with WWE had resumed. Big Shows Confirmation of participation in the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal suggested that the match would not take place after all. According to Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter , O'Neal's fee was too low, which is why the match would be canceled. Big Show, however, wanted this match badly, especially as it was likely to be his last WrestleMania , and insulted O'Neal by saying that he had retired from the match for weight reasons. In the end, the match didn't take place.

According to a statement by Dave Meltzer in January 2017, Vince McMahon "was considering a match between The Undertaker and John Cena as a substitute so that the big event would stay in the conversation long afterwards and not be forgotten so quickly," but a challenge of the Undertakers by Roman Reigns.

Storyline

In the run-up to this event, 13 matches were scheduled, including eight title matches, a 33-man Battle Royal and three matches for the pre-show WrestleMania Kickoff . These resulted from the storylines shown in the weeks before and after the Royal Rumble 30 on Raw , SmackDown Live and 205 Live , the weekly shows of the WWE. The main fight was a no-holds-barred match between Roman Reigns and The Undertaker. Traditionally, the Royal Rumble winner earns a title match against the WWE Champion. Since the structure of the roster has changed since the last WrestleMania , there is a WWE Champion for every main roster. Accordingly, the winner of the Royal Rumble , Randy Orton, competed against the champion of the raster SmackDown , Bray Wyatt.

Austin Aries versus Neville

Cruiserweight Champion Neville , 2017

On March 5, 2017 Neville was able to defend the WWE Cruiserweight Championship against Jack Gallagher at WWE Fastlane , but still had a rematch against Rich Swann open from the Royal Rumble 30 , which he also won in the following Raw edition. After the match, he said no one in the Cruiserweight Division had matched him yet. Austin Aries , who had been out for a while due to an injury, disagreed and attacked Neville, challenging him for the championship. In the Raw issue of the March 13 has been a Fatal Five-Way elimination match between Aries, The Brian Kendrick , Tony Nese , TJP and Akira Tozawa , the winner number 1 challenger for WrestleMania 33 should be, for the The following 205 live show is scheduled. Aries won the match, after which the championship title match against Neville for the WrestleMania Kickoff Show was determined. There were further skirmishes between the two over the next few weeks. In the last 205 live edition, Neville Austin attacked Aries and pulled back before Aries could strike back.

André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

In the SmackDown episode of March 7, 2017, Mojo Rawley was announced as the first participant in the 4th André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal . At Talking Smack , Apollo Crews announced its participation. In the March 13th edition of Raw , planning for a match between Big Show and basketball player Shaquille O'Neal was discarded after Big Show was announced as a participant in the Battle Royal. Curt Hawkins confirmed his participation on SmackDown the following week . The March 27 edition of Raw announced the participation of Curtis Axel , Bo Dallas , Jinder Mahal , Braun Strowman , The Shining Stars ( Epico and Primo ) and The Golden Truth ( Goldust and R-Truth ). Later that evening, Sami Zayn was able to qualify in a no-disqualification match against Kevin Owens for participation in the Battle Royal , which was scheduled for the WrestleMania kick-off show. The following evening at SmackDown , American Alpha ( Chad Gable and Jason Jordan ), Breezango ( Tyler Breeze and Fandango ), Rhyno , Heath Slater , Dolph Ziggler and the SmackDown day team champions The Usos (Jey and Jimmy Uso ) announced. On March 30th, Mark Henry and Tian Bing , the first WWE Chinese wrestler to join NXT at the time , were confirmed for the match. Killian Dain , also on NXT , was announced as the last participant on April 1st.

Dean Ambrose versus Baron Corbin

During the WWE Championship Elimination Chamber Match at WWE Elimination Chamber , when Baron Corbin and The Miz faced each other, Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose eliminated Corbin with a rollup pinfall . An angry Corbin then attacked Ambrose with an End of Days , so that The Miz only had to pin him and thus eliminated him in turn. In the following issue of SmackDown , Ambrose demanded a revenge against Corbin and was attacked by Corbin when he appeared in the ring for a match against James Ellsworth . At the Royal Rumble in the Battle Royal for the number 1 challenger of the WWE Champion Bray Wyatt, Ambrose threw Corbin out of the ring. Again Corbin attacked Ambrose after his elimination with an End of Days, whereupon Ambrose was also eliminated by Brock Lesnar . Over the next few weeks Ambrose had repeatedly asked for a match against Corbin until he attacked him backstage and unequivocally challenged him for the Intercontinental Championship. On the March 14th episode of SmackDown , Corbin formally challenged Ambrose for his WrestleMania 33 title . The following week, Ambrose distracted Corbin in his match against Randy Orton, so that Corbin lost the match. After that, Dean Ambrose accepted his challenge and hit Baron Corbin with a dirty deed . The match was scheduled for the WrestleMania kickoff show.

Shane McMahon versus AJ Styles

AJ Styles , 2016

At the Royal Rumble , AJ Styles lost his WWE Championship title to John Cena. Styles was then confirmed as a participant in the WWE Championship Elimination Chamber Match at WWE Elimination Chamber , and SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon promised him a rematch if he does not win the title back at Elimination Chamber . At Elimination Chamber , Bray Wyatt eliminated both Cena and Styles and won the WWE Championship. Cena immediately appealed to his rematch clause, but Styles intervened by promising McMahon that he would get a rematch as the number one challenger. SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan then set up a triple threat match between the three for the WWE Championship, which Wyatt was able to defend successfully. When Randy Orton, as the winner of the Battle Royal at the Royal Rumble, had renounced the WWE Championship against Wyatt at WrestleMania 33, Bryan set a 10-man Battle Royal for the number 1 challenger, which resulted in a tie between Styles and Luke Harper ended. The two were compared for the following week in an individual match for the number 1 challenger. Styles pinned Harper, but the referee missed Harper's leg on the rope. Then McMahon came to the ring and had the match restarted, which annoyed Styles very much, even if he had won it in the end. At the end of the show, Orton demanded the right to his title match against Wyatt at WrestleMania . For this reason, Bryan and McMahon set another match for the number 1 challenger, this time between Styles and Orton, which Orton could also win. After the show, Styles was so upset that there was a heated argument between McMahon and him backstage. The following week, an angry Styles announced that he was over with Bryan and McMahon. Because of them, he didn't get a match at WrestleMania , but Orton, who set fire to him, did. Styles later attacked McMahon backstage and pushed him through a car window. Bryan Styles ( kayfabe ) fired at this, but at the end of the show an injured McMahon challenged Styles to a match at WrestleMania , which Styles accepted. On the following week's show, McMahon quoted AJ Styles out and they both got into a brawl that ended with Shane McMahon's Leap of Faith by the commentary table. In the following week, the two officially signed the contract amid a heated argument.

Chris Jericho versus Kevin Owens

In mid-2016, Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens began supporting each other and performing as a tag team. It was thanks to Jericho that Owens won the vacant WWE Universal Championship, which quickly led to them becoming best friends. Jericho helped Owens defend his title against Seth Rollins at Clash of Champions and Hell in a cell 2016. The two were named captains of Team Raw at the WWE Survivor Series in 2016, but lost to Team SmackDown there . In the following edition of Raw , tension between the two simmered, and Jericho tried to raise the List of Jericho against Owens. This defended himself by saying that he had always tried to protect Jericho from being eliminated from the match. Both then agreed that Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns were the culprits for the defeat. Rollins then faced Owens and called for a title match for the Universal Championship, but Jericho interrupted the two again. The following week Reigns officially challenged Owens for the Universal Championship, doubting Owens' victory without Jericho's support. Owens indicated he didn't need Jericho's help, and the match was scheduled for Roadblock: End of the Line 2016. In this match, Jericho attacked Owens, so Reigns was disqualified and Owens could keep the title. In the weeks that followed, Owens and Jericho Reigns challenged the United States Championship , which Jericho won. Reigns lost the rematch to Owens intervention. At the Royal Rumble , Reigns competed again for the Universal Championship against Owens, while Jericho was hung over the ring in a Shark Cage . This time, Braun Strowman intervened in the match, and Owens again retained the title. Jericho indicated he was challenging Owens for a title-for-title match at WrestleMania 33, but accepted Bill Goldberg's challenge for his Universal Championship at Fastlane on Owens' behalf , to which Owens was apparently dismayed. Then Jericho celebrated a Festival of Friendship for Owens, but this ended with a brutal attack on Jericho. In retaliation, Jericho cost Owens' victory and thus the Universal Championship at Fastlane . The following night on Raw , Jericho stated that he intervened in the match because Owens had betrayed him and asked him why. Owens replied that he and Jericho were never friends and that he only used Jericho after he accepted Goldberg's challenge on his behalf. Jericho then challenged Owens to a match at WrestleMania , which Owens accepted on the condition that the match be played for the United States Championship. Owens indicated that he would keep an eye on the rematch for the Universal Championship, but first wanted the title of United States Champion back. In the Raw edition of March 20, 2017, on Highlight Reel , Jericho presented the "real" Owens, whereupon he attacked him from behind and destroyed the List of Jericho . The following week, Owens faced Sami Zayn in a no-holds barred match . If Zayn lost this, he would have been fired from the WWE. Samoa Joe intervened in this match , who still had an outstanding score with Zayn and wanted to help Owens win. But Chris Jericho showed up and stopped Samoa Joe, which resulted in Zayn's victory. Jericho then pulled out a new list and entered Kevin Owens' name.

Sasha Banks, Bailey, Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax against each other

Sasha Banks , 2016

At Roadblock: End of the Line 2016, Charlotte Flair won her fourth WWE Raw Women's Championship against Sasha Banks , ending her long feud over the contractual clause that as long as one is the champion, the other is not for the title can challenge. Charlotte began with a feud against Bayley that resulted in a championship at the 2017 Royal Rumble in which Charlotte was able to defend her title. It was during this time that Sasha Banks also began a feud with Nia Jax , in which Sasha was defeated on the Royal Rumble Kickoff Show. The next night on Raw, Bayley pinned Charlotte in a six-man mixed tag team match , after which she received a rematch for the title on the Raw episode on February 13, 2017. She was able to defeat Charlotte with the help of Sasha and became a WWE Raw Women's Champion. The following week asked Raw -Commissioner Stephanie McMahon Bayley about to give her title again, as he would be entitled not her because of the engagement Sasha. But Bayley did not comply, whereupon Charlotte referred to her rematch for the title at Fastlane. Sasha, who had just defeated Nia Jax before, interfered in the match, after which Charlotte's winning streak in pay-per-view matches ended. The following night on Raw , Sasha asked Bayley to have a friendship title match at WrestleMania 33. Charlotte came out and demanded the rematch she was entitled to for the title against Bayley because Sasha intervened in the matches. Then Raw General Manager Mick Foley set a match between Charlotte and Sasha, the winner of which is the number 1 challenger against Bayley at WrestleMania . McMahon, however, decided against Charlotte getting the title match at WrestleMania - however, if Sasha wins the match against Bayley, there will be a triple threat title match between Bayley, Charlotte and Sasha. Sasha won the match against Bayley. The following week, Sasha defeated Charlotte's partner Dana Brooke , who was supposed to take Sasha off. Thereupon Charlotte fired Brooke and insulted her, which she refused to let go and attacked Charlotte. Nia Jax should also get a chance for the title at WrestleMania if she can beat Bayley. Jax was disqualified for ignoring the referee's requests, but the following week she beat Bayley in a rematch, giving her a chance for the title at WrestleMania . The week before the Raw edition, the title match at WrestleMania 33 was set as a Fatal Four Way Elimination Match . In a final match before WrestleMania , Team Bayley and Sasha Banks defeated Team Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax. After the match, Jax struck down her three opponents.

Enzo Amore and Big Cass, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, Cesaro and Sheamus and The Hardy Boyz against each other

In the 2017 Royal Rumble kickoff show , Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson won the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship against Cesaro and Sheamus . Cesaro and Sheamus pleaded their due rematch, but were interrupted by Enzo Amore and Big Cass . In the February 20th edition of Raw , Enzo and Big Cass beat Cesaro and Sheamus in a tag team championship match that they lost against Gallows and Anderson at Fastlane . The following night on Raw , Cesaro and Sheamus intervened in the rematch, after which the title again stayed with Gallows and Anderson. Later that night, Raw General Manager Mick Foley scheduled a match between Team Cesaro and Sheamus and Team Enzo and Big Cass for the next edition, with the clause that the winners of WrestleMania 33 would play the Tag Team Championship against Gallows and Anderson become. However, since Gallows and Anderson had intervened against both teams in the match, a double disqualification was pronounced. Because of this, Mick Foley set a Triple Threat Tag Team title match at WrestleMania . The following week, Foley was fired by Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon. Contrary to his decision, she scheduled a handicap match between Gallows, Anderson, Enzo and Big Cass against Cesaro and Sheamus, on the condition that if Cesaro and Sheamus lost, they would not be at WrestleMania . However, Cesaro and Sheamus won the match and remained in the Triple Threat Tag Team Title Match at WrestleMania . Gallows and Anderson attacked Cesaro and Sheamus backstage with a ladder the next week. They also tried to attack Enzo and Big Cass in the ring, but were again attacked by Cesaro and Sheamus with a ladder. There was a wild brawl between the three teams, which Gallows and Anderson won. As a result, the match at WrestleMania was transformed into a Triple Threat Tag Team Leader Match for the Raw Tag Team Championship. Until shortly before WrestleMania there was speculation that the Hardy Boyz from Ring of Honor would return , after which the match became a Fatal-4-Way-Tag-Team-Leader-Match.

Nikki Bella and John Cena versus Maryse and The Miz

Maryse and the Intercontinental Champion The Miz , 2016

Backstage at Elimination Chamber 2017, a confrontation between Nikki Bella and Natalya resulted in Natalya pushing Nikki at Maryse . Later that night, The Miz tried to eliminate John Cena from the WWE Championship Elimination Chamber Match after he was eliminated by Cena. In the February 21st edition of SmackDown , the Falls Count Anywhere match between Nikki and Natalya led to the backstage area, where Natalya again pushed Nikki against Maryse, who fought against Nikki with a pipe, giving her the victory cost. In the main match of the evening, The Miz and Cena faced each other during the Battle Royal for the number 1 challenger to the WWE Championship and Cena again eliminated The Miz. But this returned to the ring and could in turn help to expel Cenas. Cena was invited to Miz TV , where The Miz cursed Cena as a hypocrite for doing mostly what he criticized about The Rock : leaving WWE behind and going to Hollywood . The Miz made it clear that he was training as hard as Cena, but would not get any chances like him. He helped eliminate Cenas so they wouldn't get a chance to go to WrestleMania 33. He wanted to know how Cena felt when he defeated The Miz in Extreme Rules 2011 and regained the WWE Championship title. The Miz also said that Cena would get any match he wanted, but Cena replied that if he did, he would face The Undertaker . For his part, Cena criticized The Miz for copying other people's gimmicks and ring promotions, whereupon Maryse slapped on her husband's behalf. When Nikki got into the ring, Maryse and The Miz withdrew. The following week, Maryse and The Miz attacked the two during their match against James Ellsworth and Carmella . The Miz was fed up with Cena's lies and also indicated that his relationship with Nikki was also a lie. Afterward, on Talking Smack , Maryse and The Miz said that Nikki was jealous of Maryse's relationship with Cena because Cena would not marry her. The following week, Maryse and The Miz continued insulting Nikki and Cena until they got out and chased the two out of the ring. SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan came out saying that he has been insulted by him for several months since he was no longer able to compete against The Miz and put a match between Team Maryse and The Miz and Team Nikki and Cena at WrestleMania 33 firmly. Maryse last appeared in a match in 2011. She and The Miz made fun of Nikki and Cena's reality show Total Bellas and stalked them both. On March 27, Cena was invited to host NBC's Today on TV . He announced weather moderator Al Roker as guest ring spokesman for his match at WrestleMania . In the final episode of SmackDown before WrestleMania 33, Maryse and The Miz continued their amusements at the Total Bellas . They announced that Cena never wanted children from Nikki. Cena gave in to how many children Maryse and The Miz had. He indicated that like other WWE Superstars and The Miz, he would be back in the ring after the film was shot. Because of her salary, Cena called Maryse a waste of money as she did nothing more at WWE than accompany The Miz. John Cena pointed out that he and Nikki Bella were going to kill Maryse and The Miz at WrestleMania .

Seth Rollins versus Triple H

In 2014 there was a feud between The Shield ( Seth Rollins , Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns ) and Evolution ( Triple H , Batista and Randy Orton ). After numerous defeats to The Shield, the angry Batista left the WWE, whereupon evolution broke up. Then Triple H presented his plan B: Rollins joins his authority , attacks his brothers of the Shield and thus also becomes a heel . Rollins was the head of the authority for over a year and won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 31, but had to give up the title due to an injury in November 2015. He returned to Raw in mid-2016 and faced Finn Bálor for the WWE Universal Championship at Summerslam 2016, without success . When Bálor had to give up the title because of an injury, Rollins qualified for a fatal four-way elimination match for the vacant title. During that match, Triple H, not seen since WrestleMania 32, helped Rollins eliminate Reigns, but then attacked Rollins with a pedigree . Kevin Owens benefited from this and won the Universal Championship. Rollins faced Sami Zayn in a match on the January 23, 2017 issue of Raw . At the climax of the match, Triple H's music played, which distracted Rollins and brought Sami Zayn the qualification for the Royal Rumble as the winner. On NXT TakeOver: San Antonio , a day before Royal Rumble, Rollins challenged Triple H for a match. Triple H came out and had Rollins' security removed from the ring. On January 30th on Raw , he urged Rollins to come into the ring. On the way, he was attacked by Samoa Joe from NXT , who made his debut on the main roster. Samoa Joe injured Rollins' knee again, which previously forced him to take a six-month break. Rollins should continue to be out for eight weeks. On the February 27th edition of Raw , Rollins lost a few words about his health and announced that it would be unlikely to be a part of WrestleMania 33. Then Triple H came out with Samoa Joe and warned Rollins not to appear on WrestleMania . But then Rollins indicated that he would be sure to be there. Videos of Rollins' rehabilitation were shown the following week, and Triple H said Rollins was trying to compete at WrestleMania, despite medical objections . The following week there was an argument between Tripple H and Raw General Manager Mick Foley, in which Rollins intervened and attacked Triple H. Triple H gained the upper hand and attacked Rollins' injured knee. As a result of this argument, Foley was fired as General Manager of Raw on March 20 . Rollins' physical therapist Kevin Wilk said he shouldn't compete in WrestleMania . Triple H challenged Rollins to a no-rules match, with the contractual clause that if he were violated again, he could not sue the WWE. The following week, Rollins officially signed the contract, and a fight broke out between the two.

Randy Orton versus Bray Wyatt

Randy Orton (right), Bray Wyatt (front) and Luke Harper (left)

Since Randy Orton had won the Royal Rumble 2017 and thus the second of his career, he became a challenger to the WWE Championship of his rustler SmackDown . After Orton failed to win several matches against the Wyatts, he was accepted into the Wyatt Family in October 2016 . At Elimination Chamber on February 12th, Bray Wyatt won the Elimination Chamber Match and became the new WWE Champion. He successfully defended the title against John Cena and AJ Styles in the following edition of SmackDown . Orton then resigned from the match against Wyatt at WrestleMania due to his devotion to Wyatt. SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan then set up a 10-man battle royal, the winner of which Wyatt was to become the number 1 challenger at WrestleMania . The battle royal ended in a tie when Styles and Luke Harper fell over the top rope at the same time. The following week, Styles defeated Harper for the title match, but at the end of the issue, Orton showed the TitanTron where Matriarch Sister Abigail is buried on the Wyatt family property. Orton then announced that he had only joined the Wyatt Family to destroy them from the inside out and set the property on fire. As a result, Wyatt suffered a nervous breakdown. When Orton intended to challenge Wyatt again for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania , Daniel Bryan and SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon, the number one challenger, decided in a match between Orton and AJ Styles. Orton defeated Styles in the March 7th issue of SmackDown . The following week, March 14, Orton was interrupted by Wyatt. He now has the power of Sister Abigail, whom he rescued from the ashes. On March 21, Harper warned Orton of Wyatt's new power, but also said he would take him off in the next issue. Orton was later attacked backstage by Wyatt's aides, and he himself performed a ritual on Orton. In the last edition of SmackDown before WrestleMania 33, Orton appeared on the TitanTron after Wyatt's victory over Harper, claiming to have destroyed Sister Abigail's power.

Bill Goldberg versus Brock Lesnar

At WrestleMania XX in 2004 won Bill Goldberg over Brock Lesnar in their first match against each other. Both then left the WWE, but Lesnar returned in 2012. After twelve years, in 2016, Goldberg also returned and immediately began a feud with Lesnar, who led in a match between the two at the Survivor Series 2016 , which Goldberg won in 1 minute and 26 seconds. Then both competed as participants in the Royal Rumble . Lesnar entered the ring as number 26 and eliminated some wrestlers until Goldberg entered the ring as number 28 and again very quickly knocked Lesnar out. Goldberg was eliminated by Undertaker shortly afterwards . The following night on Raw , Paul Heyman and Lesnar challenged Goldberg to one final match at WrestleMania 33. On the following edition of Raw , Goldberg took on Lesnar's challenge and in turn challenged Kevin Owens to the 2017 Universal Championship at Fastlane . Heyman and Lesnar said in an interview with Michael Cole that if Goldberg were to win the Universal Championship, Lesnar would challenge him for that title at WrestleMania . The following week Goldberg promised to win the match against Owens and become Universal Champion in order to play against Lesnar at WrestleMania . At Fastlane on March 5, Goldberg kept his promise, winning the Universal Championship against Owens and turning his WrestleMania match against Lesnar into a Universal Championship. The following night on Raw , Lesnar confronted Goldberg and extended his hand, but Goldberg knocked it out. Then Lesnar attacked Goldberg with an F-5 . The following week, Heyman and Lesnar made fun of Goldberg for taking an F-5 and having WrestleMania make the "biggest comeback in sports entertainment history." In the last Raw edition before WrestleMania , Goldberg performed Lesnar with a spear .

Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Mickie James, Becky Lynch, Naomi and Natalya against each other

At Elimination Chamber , Naomi defeated Alexa Bliss to win the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship, but a leg injury forced her to give up the title. Since a rematch between Naomi and Bliss was not possible, Bliss insisted that her title be recognized back. SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan , however, set a match between Becky Lynch and Bliss for the vacant title, which Bliss won. In the March 7, 2017 issue of SmackDown , she was challenged by Lynch, Natalya, and even her allies Mickie James for a title match at WrestleMania . Bryan decided that Bliss should prove her claim to be "The Roster's Greatest Wrestler" and defend the title against every SmackDown wrestler available at WrestleMania , which shocked Bliss. In the ensuing tag team match between Bliss and James versus Lynch and Natalya, both Natalya and James turned on their own partners. The following week, Lynch beat Natalya, but both were attacked by Carmella. Later that night, James beat Bliss. In the March 21, issue of SmackDown , Natalya intervened in the match between Lynch and Carmella. A brawl broke out in which James and Bliss also interfered. Bliss eliminated all of her opponents. In the last edition of SmackDown before WrestleMania , Naomi returned and attacked all the wrestlers, declaring that she would take part in the match at WrestleMania , which would become a six-pack challenge.

Roman Reigns versus The Undertaker

At the Royal Rumble Roman Reigns met the Undertaker as the 30th participant and eliminated him. Shortly afterwards he shouted, "This is my yard now!" On the March 6th edition of Raw , Braun Strowman Roman, who had lost to Reigns at Fastlane , called out Reigns. Instead, the Undertaker appeared and both had a duel until Strowman left the ring. Then Reigns came out and repeated that WWE was now his "yard". After another duel, The Undertaker attacked Reigns with a chokeslam . The following week, a match between the two was scheduled at WrestleMania 33. Later on Raw, the Undertaker's bell rang during Reigns' match against Jinder Mahal. Reigns was distracted by this, but still triumphed over Mahal. After the match, Reigns called the Undertaker out, but Shawn Michaels showed up and wanted to give Reigns tactical advice against the Undertaker. Reigns obviously appreciated this, but indicated that he would end the Undertaker's career, just as the Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI did with Michaels' career. On the next edition of Raw , during Reigns' rematch against Braun Strowman, Undertaker attacked Strowman with the chokeslam , but was then surprised with the Spear from Reigns. When Reigns left the ring, the Undertaker straightened up and showed his throat slit gesture. In the last week before WrestleMania , Undertaker Reigns indicated that the “graveyard” after WrestleMania would be his “yard”.

Major event

Pre-show

Three matches were played in the two-hour pre-show WrestleMania 33 Kickoff .

In the first match, Neville defended the WWE Cruiserweight Championship against Austin Aries. When Aries finally tried to set the Last Chancery against Neville, the latter caught him in the eye, set the Red Arrow against Aries and won the match.

The André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal fought 33 wrestlers, including the not previously announced participants Kalisto , Sin Cara , Luke Harper , Titus O'Neil , The Vaudevillains ( Aiden English and Simon Gotch ) and The Ascension ( Konnor and Viktor ) . At the end of the match, Jinder Mahal mocked the tight end of New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski , who was sitting on the edge of the ring. Then Gronkowski stepped into the ring and pushed Mahal. Mojo Rawley took the opportunity to eliminate Mahal and win the match.

In the third match, Dean Ambrose defended the Intercontinental Championship against Baron Corbin. In the end, Corbin tried to set the End of Days against Ambrose, who countered, however, set the Dirty Deeds against Corbin and won the match.

Pay-per-view show

The New Day opened WrestleMania 33

Since Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods are from Florida, they opened the major event taking place in Orlando, Florida as The New Day. They appeared as characters from the online computer game Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood , whose producer Square Enix also sponsored the event. They came in the ring and created a good mood among the live audience.

In the first match, AJ Styles met Shane McMahon. McMahon countered Styles' Springboard 450 ° splash with a triangle choke . After a counterattack by Styles with a Styles Clash, McMahon almost lost. After it knocked the referee down, Styles tried to set the coast-to-coast against McMahon, but McMahon countered with the use of a dustbin. McMahon, for his part, started the coast-to-coast and landed on the trash can in front of Styles, which in turn nearly earned him victory. McMahon wanted to set the Leap of Faith against Styles through the commentary desk, but Styles was able to escape beforehand and McMahon himself fell through the commentary desk. When Styles wanted to start his Phenomenal Forearm , McMahon countered with a float-over DDT . Styles managed to break free from McMahon's shooting star press , started the Phenomenal Forearm on the second attempt and beat McMahon.

In the following match, Chris Jericho defended the United States Championship against Kevin Owens. Jericho countered Owens' pop-up powerbomb with a Lionsault and was almost able to defeat him. Owens put the Walls of Jericho against Jericho itself, from which he was able to free himself. A pop-up powerbomb against Jericho followed, and the referee almost counted. Jericho countered another pop-up powerbomb with the Codebreaker . When the referee was on "two", Owens was able to grab the ring rope with one finger and save himself from defeat. At the end of the match, Owens used a power bomb against Jericho on the hard edge of the mat, pinned it and won his first United States Championship.

Bayley defended the Raw Women's Championship in a Fatal Four-Way Elimination Match against Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, Nia Jax. Sasha, Bayley and Charlotte set up a triple powerbomb against Nia Jax, and all three of them were able to pin her down. Sasha set the bank statement against Charlotte, who was able to save herself from it and threw Sasha into the exposed corner of the ring. Charlotte pinned and eliminated her from the match. At the end of the match, Charlotte was thrown into the exposed corner of the ring, which made it easier for Bayley to successfully defend her title with a diving elbow drop .

In the fourth match, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows were originally supposed to defend the Raw Tag Team Championship in a Triple Threat Ladder Match against Cesaro and Sheamus and Enzo Amore and Big Cass. Prior to the match, The New Day announced the return of the Hardy Boyz Jeff and Matt Hardy who would be attending the match. At the end of the match, Matt Hardy started the Twist of Fate from the ladder against Karl Anderson, and Jeff Hardy landed the Swanton Bomb through the ladder on Cesaro and Sheamus. Matt Hardy accepted the title belt for his team for the first time.

Later that evening, John Cena and Nikki Bella competed in a mixed tag team match against The Miz and Maryse. Al Roker, who hosts the Today Show on NBC , was invited to be the guest ring speaker . At the end of the match, John Cena and Nikki Bella shared a Five Knuckle Shuffles against The Miz and Maryse. While Cena made an attitude adjustment against The Miz, Maryse was beaten by Nikki Bella with a Rack Attack 2.0 . With a pin, John Cena and Nikki Bella won the match. After the match, Cena Nikki made an offer of marriage that she accepted.

Triple H faced
Seth Rollins in the sixth match

In the next match, Seth Rollins met Triple H in a non-disqualification match. During the match, Triple H countered Rollins' pedigree with a DDT on the commentary table . Trying to weaken Rollins' leg, Triple H put on an inverted figure-four leglock . To escape this, Rollins rolled out of the ring. When Triple H tried to use the sledgehammer, Rollins countered with an enzuigiri . When Rollins got hold of the hammer, Stephanie McMahon snatched the gun from him. The distraction allowed Triple H to nearly win one pedigree against Rollins. Triple H then attempted a super pedigree against Rollins, but he countered with a Phoenix Splash . After a slugfest Rollins hit Triple H with a super kick , and he stumbled against Stephanie and she fell through a laid down on the ring edge of the table. With a pedigree , Rollins was ultimately able to win the match.

Bray Wyatt defended the WWE Championship against Randy Orton in the following match. Orton tried to set the RKO at the beginning of the match , but Wyatt rolled out of the ring. During the match, Wyatt began his mind games and ran large shadows of various insects on the mat. Outside the ring, Wyatt Orton and a sister attacked Abigail against the ring barrier. Later Orton could almost win against Wyatt with an RKO , with a Sister Abigail against Orton the referee could only count to "two". With another RKO against Wyatt Orton could determine the match for himself and win the ninth WWE Championship, the first at a WrestleMania .

In the next match Goldberg had to defend the Universal Championship against Brock Lesnar. Lesnar started three German suplexes against Goldberg. But this recovered quickly and attacked Lesnar with two Spears , who then rolled out of the ring. Another spear against Lesnar went through the ring fence at the timekeeper. Back in the ring, Goldberg countered Lesnar's F-5 with another spear , followed by a jackhammer . Goldberg tried to add a fifth Spear , but Lesnar evaded and knocked out Goldberg with seven other German suplexes . With the F-5 against Goldberg, Lesnar won his first Universal Championship and ended Goldberg's winning streak. He also became the first wrestler to hold both the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship.

In the penultimate match, Alexa Bliss defended the SmackDown Women's Championship against Carmella, Mickie James, Becky Lynch, Naomi and Natalya in a six-pack challenge. Naomi forced Alexa Bliss to give up in the Slay-o-Mission , winning her second SmackDown Women's Championship and building on her record.

Main match

Roman Reigns triumphed over Undertaker and ended his career

The main match between Undertaker and Roman Reigns was to be played as a No Holds Barred Match. For this match, Jim Ross returned to the ring as a guest commentator. During the match, the Undertaker used a chokeslam against Reigns on the commentary desk . Reigns attacked Undertaker with a spear through another commentary desk. The Undertaker was almost able to beat Reigns on a last ride . He countered two subsequent Superman punches from Reigns with a chokeslam on a chair, which in turn nearly earned him the win. After a tombstone piledriver against Reigns, the referee repeatedly only came up to "two". After the Undertaker was hit again by a spear , he lured Reigns into Hell's Gate , but let him out again after a while. Reigns attacked the Undertaker with a chair and two spears - pinning it seemed impossible. As is famous for the Undertaker, he sat up but suddenly collapsed. After another spear , Reigns was able to pin the Undertaker and became the second wrestler to defeat the Undertaker at WrestleMania (after Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XXX). After the match, the Undertaker symbolically took off his gloves, coat and hat in the middle of the ring to show that it was his last match. For a very brief moment, the Undertaker paused and kissed his wife, Michelle McCool , who was sitting in the front row. The Undertaker went towards the entrance on the ramp, looked back at the audience, raised his arm as he drove down the ramp with his entrance music and his famous three-time bell gong, thus ending the big event.

reception

The WrestleMania 33 experienced both positive and negative reviews. Kevin Pang from the AV Club described the big event as "clearly too lengthy to watch it at home without any questioning about the Match of the Year 2017 or other minor surprises". Matt Gerardi, also from the AV Club, however, said that the event exceeded expectations and “the story kept what it promised throughout the evening, but without much backstage action”. Pang and Gerardi were of the opinion that WrestleMania "wasn't just about the end of the undertaker", but the main match was "sad" and "unpleasant". Because " Shawn Michaels ' sympathy and expressiveness" made Ric Flair's end of his career at WrestleMania XXIV "very moving and unforgettable", Gerardi scolded Reigns that he could "muster little more than disbelief and despair, as it was everyday life for The Big Dog" . Regarding the other matches, Pang wrote that Austin Aries against Neville fully met expectations as the "technically best match with a special ending", while Gerardi [portrayed] the match between Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens as "really solid with some cleverness and certain peculiarities. , whose ring story was simply great with all the counterattacks. "

WrestleMania 33's Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter described WrestleMania 33 as "long but packed with news," which ended with an Undertaker retirement ceremony. His match against Reigns "went as well as expected". Meltzer described that when the audience was tired at the end of the event, "the WWE clearly turned the tone down and shot the fireworks". As for the Universal Championship, Meltzer wrote, it did exactly "what was to be expected" and "the match was almost perfect, despite the late hour, which is why the live audience could no longer keep their seats." On the match between Shane McMahon and AJ Styles, Meltzer commented that "although it had its spectacular moments, McMahon was actually the better one". Regarding Dean Ambrose against Baron Corbin, Meltzer said that it was " rather too little for a WrestleMania match". The Raw women's match was "too short for an elimination match," the Raw Tag Team title match "wasn't as good as most WrestleMania ladder matches, but the hall was upside down when the Hardy Boyz came out". WWE likely "asked the audience for a bit more quiet" when John Cena proposed his marriage. Meltzer found the marriage proposal “just great”. Most recently, Meltzer said that Mojo Rawley's win at the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal was "primarily intended because of Rob Gronkowski's intervention."

Jack de Menezes of The Independent wrote that WrestleMania 33 was "a very emotional night for the fans," especially the "brutal end" of the career of the Undertaker's respect. Regarding Reigns' "disappointing, flawed demonstration ... compared to other of his rousing matches at WrestleMania ", de Menezes asked himself whether the "transition to the end of his career planned by the WWE was the right decision". Among the other memorable events of the evening, de Menezes described the return of the Hardy Boyz as "fantastic and triumphant", the match Randy Orton against Bray Wyatt as a "creepy and disturbing experience", the recovery of the SmackDown Women's title Naomis as a "memorable homecoming", the match Shane McMahon against AJ Styles as "full of highlights" and John Cena's marriage proposal as "unimaginable".

Luis Paez-Pumar from the Rolling Stone put WrestleMania 33 as "zweigesichtig like twins ". The first half "was a lively mix of presentation and matches, could believe the one that the WWE knew what this probably bored end event all would hire ”so as not to make them look like that, but as soon as Triple H appeared, the rest of the event was“ a lengthy alternation of agonizing wrestling, brief exchanges and boos ”. Paez-Pumar was of the opinion that the Undertaker "should have resigned when his winning streak was broken" instead of "having another match with Reigns in such a bad and sad way". He also stated that “WWE didn't know how to stage Bray Wyatt” because Orton “definitely didn't need the title,” and pokes fun at Wyatt's art of “projecting rough video images” as “stupid crap”. Paez-Pumar imagined “fresh blood and innovative ideas” among the women of both main rustlers as well as the resignation of Triple H, as he “had not delivered a good WrestleMania match since 2005 or 2006” except for WrestleMania XXX ”than necessary. But he was also positive; he described the match between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar as a "revitalizing shot of pure adrenaline", John Cena's marriage proposal was "as magical as no other show could do better," The New Day "were excellent, fun hosts" and who are Hardy Boyz returned.

aftermath

There was a lot of speculation about the hosting of the last Undertaker match. While it wasn't confirmed live, the WWE online store offered a commemorative photo plaque showing the Undertaker's gear lying in the ring, with the description that he had finished his wrestling career. In addition, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter announced that the Undertaker would undergo surgeries for his injuries, particularly a hip replacement, which would prevent him from continuing to work under contract with the WWE. The following year at WrestleMania 34, however, the Undertaker returned and defeated John Cena.

Despite John Cena proposing to Nikki to Bella at the event and she also accepted it, Bella announced on her Instagram account on April 15, 2018 that she and Cena had ended their six-year relationship.

Raw

In the first Raw edition on the evening following WrestleMania 33, Roman Reigns stopped the calls of the live audience such as “Undertaker” and “Roman sucks”. After the boos and enemy chants that lasted for several minutes in the crowd, Reigns left the hall with the words “This is my yard now!”. With the crowd speculating that the match against Reigns would be the Undertaker's last, fan opposition to Reigns has increased.

Brock Lesnar with his lawyer Paul Heyman

Later that evening, Paul Heyman, attorney for new Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, stated that Goldberg would never be seen again and toying with a match between Lesnar and Reigns. This called Braun Strowman into the ring, who made it clear that only when he had cleared Reigns, he would be ready for Lesnar and his title. After the show, on Raw Talk , Goldberg stated that the match at WrestleMania was the last for the time being, but a return to the ring shouldn't seem impossible. Strowman brutally attacked Reigns in the following week's issue during a backstage interview, locking Reigns in an ambulance and knocking it over. Reigns was taken to the hospital in another ambulance. A match between the two was scheduled for Payback 2017.

Also in the first episode of Raw after WrestleMania , WWE Chairman Vince McMahon stated that he was removing his daughter Stephanie from the storyline because she had to recover from falling through a table after an accidental collision with Triple H. He named the in the on April 2, 2017 WWE Hall of Fame recorded Kurt Angle as Raw -General Manager. He also announced that he would be exchanging some of the wrestlers among the main Rosters.

Chris Jericho was granted a rematch to the United States Championship against Kevin Owens at Payback . He was then attacked backstage by Owens and Samoa Joe. In the SmackDown episode of April 11, 2017, it was decided that Jericho, like Owens , would move to SmackDown if he won the United States Championship at Payback . Seth Rollins also continued his feud against Samoa Joe and got a match against him at Payback .

In the Raw edition after WrestleMania 33, the Hardy Boyz also defended their Raw Tag Team Championship in a rematch against Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. Cesaro and Sheamus won a title match at Payback by beating Enzo Amore and Big Cass . The New Day took on an open-ended challenge that was accepted as the main roster debut by The Revival's Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder from NXT . After their defeat, they continued to hit The New Day, injuring Kofi Kingston's ankle. The following week, The New Day (cast by Big E and Xavier Woods) lost the rematch against The Revival and moved to SmackDown due to the Superstar Shake-Up .

In the Women's Division, Raw Women's Champions Bayley, Sasha Banks and Dana Brooke defeated Team Charlotte Flair, Nia Jax and Emma, who had returned to WWE . When Sasha was about to challenge Bayley for the Raw Women's Championship the following week , Alexa Bliss and Mickie James, who had just moved to Raw , intervened, and Charlotte moved to SmackDown . Since Alexa had won a fatal four-way match shortly afterwards, she got the title chance at Payback .

In the first episode of 205 Live of the Cruiserweight Division after WrestleMania , Austin Aries received another title chance at Payback after winning a Fatal Four Way match.

SmackDown

Randy Orton became the new WWE Champion

In the first SmackDown episode after WrestleMania , Bray Wyatt challenged new WWE Champion Randy Orton to a House of Horrors match. Orton took on the challenge, which shouldn't be about the title. In the ensuing brawl between the two, Luke Harper intervened for Orton and Erick Rowans, who was returning to WWE, helped Wyatt. A tag team match between Orton and Harper and Wyatt and Rowan was scheduled, which the former won. Wyatt moved to Raw the following week , the rematch against Orton was scheduled for Payback .

Also in the first SmackDown show, Commissioner Shane McMahon addressed the superstar Shake-Up . His opponent at WrestleMania , AJ Styles, cut him off with a request to stay with SmackDown and paid him respect with a handshake. The following week, AJ Styles was confirmed to stay at SmackDown , beating Baron Corbin and Sami Zayn. The latter moved to Raw and was there number 1 challenger for the United States Championship at WWE Backlash . Baron Corbin defeated Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose in a street fight. This was the last meeting of the two for the time being, because Ambrose moved to Raw with the championship because of the superstar shake-up .

Maryse and The Miz continued their personal attacks on newly weds Nikki Bella and John Cena. They made fun of Cena's marriage proposal and criticized her WWE hiatus just before WrestleMania . When they were about to leave the ring, they were intercepted by Shinsuke Nakamura , who was making his main roster debut. Maryse and The Miz moved to Raw where they got into an argument with Ambrose. Jinder Mahal moved to SmackDown , where he continued his feud with Mojo Rawley and Rob Gronkowski. Rawley defeated Mahal due to an intervention by Gronkowski. Mahal and Rawley took part in a six-pack challenge that Mahal won. This made him the number 1 challenger for the WWE Championship at Backlash .

In the women's division, Alexa Bliss lost her rematch for the SmackDown Women's Championship to Naomi. The following week, Alexa Bliss and Mickie James moved to Raw for the superstar shake-up . Charlotte Flair, who moved to SmackDown , defeated Naomi to become the number 1 challenger.
