The WWE SmackDown Women's Championship is a women's wrestling title of the US promotion WWE , which is awarded exclusively to the women's division of the SmackDown rooster. The title was introduced on August 20, 2016 after the WWE Women's Championship moved exclusively to Raw . Today it is one of the four women's titles defended in the WWE. The current title holder in her second reign is Bayley . As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline.
history
On May 25, 2016, WWE announced in a press release that the division of the WWE roster, known as the Rostersplit or Brand Extension , which was introduced in 2002 and discontinued at the end of 2011, will return as part of the future permanent live broadcast of SmackDown . The WWE Draft took place on July 19, 2016 on the first live edition of SmackDown. After Charlotte and with her the WWE Women's Championship had been drafted to Raw , SmackDown remained without a women's title.
The day after SummerSlam , Daniel Bryan , general manager of SmackDown announced on Twitter that a new women's title would be introduced for the women's division of the SmackDown rooster. At the SmackDown edition on August 23, 2016, Daniel Bryan and the SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon presented the Smackdown Women's Championship . On the same evening, they announced that the first female title holder would be determined on September 11, 2016 at the SmackDown backlash event in a six-pack elimination challenge between Alexa Bliss , Becky Lynch , Carmella, Naomi , Natalya and Nikki Bella . On September 11, 2016 , Becky Lynch won the Six-Pack Challenge and was crowned the first SmackDown Women's Champion.
On December 16, 2018, Becky Lynch defended the title against Charlotte Flair and Asuka in TLC 's main pay-per-view battle : Tables, Ladders & Chairs . The match that Asuka won was the first tables-ladders-chairs match in the women's division. Flair defended the title in a winner-takes-all-triple-threat match against Raw Women's Champion Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch. This match that Lynch could win was the first main fight of the women at WrestleMania .
