Akira Tozawa ( Japanese 戸 澤 陽 , Tozawa Akira ; born July 22, 1985 in Nishinomiya , Japan ) is a Japanese wrestler who is currently under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment and appears on their weekly show Raw . His greatest success to date is receiving the WWE Cruiserweight Championship and receiving the WWE 24/7 Championship four times .

Wrestling career

Akira Tozawa began his career with the Japanese wrestling league Dragon Gate . There he played his first wrestling match in 2005. In May 2010 Tozawa went to the USA , where he was sent to Dragon Gate USA (DGUSA) for the purpose of Dragon Gates US expansion .

In addition to DGUSA, Tozawa made regular appearances for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG). There he also took part in the Battle of Los Angeles in 2010 , where he prevailed against El Generico in the first round.

Tozawa won his first wrestling title in the United States. He won namely at the wrestling league Anarchy Championship Wrestling (ACW) on May 15, 2011 the ACW U-30 Young Gun Championship . However, he only held the title for 6 days.

In addition to DGUSA, PWG and ACW, Tozawa also performed for Chikara and Evolve. Tozawa returned to Japan on June 8, 2011 and competed for Dragon Gate again, where he remained until 2016. In the USA he only played for occasional appearances for DGUSA matches. After his return to Japan Tozawa celebrated great success. He won the Open the Brave Gate Championship and Open the Owarai Gate Championship once , the Open the Triangle Gate Championship twice and the Open the Twin Gate Championship three times .

On March 31, 2016, Tozawa was confirmed by World Wrestling Entertainment as a participant in the Cruiserweight Classic . At the Cruiserweight Classic he made it to the quarterfinals, where he failed at Gran Metalik . After the tournament, Tozawa was signed by the WWE. Since then he has been part of the WWE Cruiserweight Division.

As a wrestler in the Cruiserweight Division, he is part of the 205 Live Rosters . On August 14, 2017, he won the WWE Cruiserweight Championship on Neville's Raw . 6 days later he lost the title at SummerSlam to Neville. On June 23, 2019 Tozawa played a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship against Tony Nese and Drew Gulak, but he lost this match.

As part of the WWE Draft, Tozawa switched from 205 Live to Raw on October 14, 2019 . On December 22, 2019, he won the WWE 24/7 Championship from R-Truth while recording for Mondaynightraw in New York , but lost it to Santa Claus that same night. He won the R-Truth title on June 22, 2020. The reign lasted 7 days and lost the title to R-Truth on June 29, 2020 . On August 3, 2020, he won the title back, defeating Shelton Benjamin . The reign lasted 7 days and lost the title to R-Truth on August 10, 2020 . On August 24, 2020, he won the title from Shelton Benjamin. After a reign of 7 days, he lost the title to R-Truth on August 31, 2020.
