WWE Extreme Rules 2017 was a WWE wrestling event that aired as pay-per-view and on the WWE Network . It took place on June 4, 2017 at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore , Maryland , United States . It was the ninth edition of Extreme Rules since 2009. The event took place for the first time at the Royal Farms Arena and for the second time since 2010 in Maryland and Baltimore.

In the run-up to the event, seven matches were scheduled, one of which was for the pre-show . These resulted from the storylines shown in the weeks leading up to Backlash on Raw , one of WWE's weekly shows. The main fight of the event was a fatal 5-way match between Bray Wyatt , Finn Bálor , Roman Reigns , Samoa Joe and Seth Rollins , which, according to the name of the event, was scheduled as an Extreme Rules match and the winner was the new challenger to the WWE Universal Championship from title holder Brock Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire on July 9, 2017.
