The event includes matches with predetermined results, which emerge from the storylines of the WWE weekly shows ( Monday Night RAW , SmackDown Live , 205 Live ). The event was based on the theme “RAW vs. SmackDown “, that means the matches were designed to deal with a fictitious conflict between the two main brands WWE RAW and WWE Smackdown Live. Accordingly, the show fights were mostly based on pitting a RAW champion against a SmackDown champion.
There were also two 5-on-5 Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Matches in which 5 RAW Superstars competed against 5 SmackDown Superstars.
preparation
In order to increase the tension on the event, mutual attacks took place, spurred on by the respective so-called "general managers" and "commissioners" of the two television programs. Kurt Angle wanted to introduce his team for the Survivor Series in WWE Raw on October 23, when wrestlers from the Smackdown roster, led by Shane McMahon, attacked the wrestlers from Raw. In addition, there was a rivalry between Angle and Stephanie McMahon on the raw roster .
On November 7th, just two weeks before the big event, AJ Styles surprisingly won the WWE Championship from Jinder Mahal in a SmackDown episode in order to compete against Brock Lesnar in the Survivor Series . This move had been expected by many fans who rejected Mahal as champion because they thought he received a push too soon. In contrast, AJ Styles is one of the most popular wrestlers currently, who also has an international reputation.
On November 14th, also shortly before the event, the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship switched from Natalya to Charlotte Flair , who was able to compete against Alexa Bliss .

particularities
With Kurt Angle , Shane McMahon , Triple H and John Cena , four out of 10 wrestlers in the main event of the event were actually no longer active and usually perform representative tasks for the WWE. On the other hand, Kurt Angle had already celebrated his return to the ring at the previous WWE TLC event after years of sideline due to injury.
Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn intervened in the main event, who subsequently had a feud with Shane McMahon, for which the course was set at this PPV. The end of the Survivor Series match was strange as Triple H turned on their own team mate Kurt Angle but then defeated Shane McMahon and won the match alongside Strowman. In the end there was a confrontation between the two winners. The outcome was also criticized by large parts of the press, especially as the McMahons came to the fore.
reception
Christian Bruns from the German magazine Power Wrestling drew an ambivalent conclusion:
“In fact, the course of the main event seemed completely absurd. Part-time wrestlers and old stars dominated the scene alongside Strowman. (...) A survivor series that had been quite decent up until then was unfortunately devalued with the main fight. In addition, no one was interested in this artificial competition by the next evening at the latest. (...) Somehow you could have just left it. "
Maurice Kneisel from Spox.com came to a more positive conclusion, even if he saw the main event similarly:
“The bottom line is an entertaining Big 4 PPV that felt relevant again for the second time in a row after many weak years. There were only a few surprises, but the show was exciting and the Survivor Series win enormously with the Brand Wars theme because it finally makes them stand out again. The only drawback remains that you could only advance a few storylines. This work now falls to the weekly shows, which have to be delivered almost two months before the start of the Road to WrestleMania. "
Neil Docking from the Daily Mirror actually thought the main event was good, but also criticized the strange ending, which was not particularly celebrated by the fans in the hall, and described the event as a success all in all.
