Utagawa Hiroshige III.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Utagawa Hiroshige III. ( Japanese 三代 歌 川 広 重 , Sandai ~ , actually Gotō Torakichi ( 後 藤 寅 吉 ) or Torajirō ( 寅 次郎 ); born early 1843 ; died March 28, 1894 ) was a Japanese painter in the ukiyoe style in the 19th century. His stage name was Isshōsai ( 一笑斎 ), Shigemasa ( 重政 ), Shigetora ( 重寅 ).

life and work

Hiroshige III. was the son of a ship's carpenter and was raised by a restaurant owner named Momogawa ( 百川 ). He then became a student of Andō Hiroshige and called himself Shigemasa. After Hiroshige II separated from his wife, a daughter of Hiroshige, in 1865 and retired to Yokohama, Shigemasa called himself Hiroshige II, although strictly speaking he was the third. As an artist he is of little interest, but he is interesting from the point of view of his choice of subjects: his preference was for the railroad and its stations.
