In his research, Kruus concentrated on two areas that were niches within Soviet Estonian literary studies that hardly anyone else dealt with: On the one hand, on the literary periphery, in which he examined unknown, forgotten or frowned upon authors, and on the other, on Estonian-Russian literary relations with a focus on Russian literature originating in Estonia. He was particularly interested in the interwar period, when he became one of the best-known researchers of the work of Igor Severyanin . A second focus was on avant-garde literature in Estonia, especially futurism .
