Valmar Adams (originally Vladimir Karl Moritz Adams , alias 1918-1922 Vladimir Aleksandrovski , * January 18 . Jul / 30th January  1899 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 15 March 1993 in Tartu ) was an Estonian writer and literary scholar.

Life

Adams lived in Tartu since 1909 and graduated from high school there in 1919. From 1923 to 1929 he studied Estonian and world literature at the University of Tartu . He then studied between 1929 and 1931 at the Charles University in Prague and also stayed at the universities in Berlin , Munich and Vienna . From 1931 he was a lecturer at the University of Tartu, from 1940 to 1974 there himself lecturer for Russian language and literature.

During the German occupation of Estonia in World War II , Adams was temporarily imprisoned by the Nazis. After the war, he fell from grace at the notorious eighth plenary session of the Estonian Communist Party in March 1950 and had to spend five years in Soviet penal camps before he was released from prison in 1955.

Adams had been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1926 .

Valmar Adams began to write in Russian and German and published in Russian almanacs. He made his book debut in 1924 with a volume of Estonian poems, which he had followed by four more by the outbreak of war. His poetry cannot be assigned to an exact current within Estonian literature, but rather formed its own. He is known for his so-called “imprecise rhyme”, which he cultivated. He was also heavily influenced by Russian pre-revolutionary poetry, which he later dealt with in his essays, for example in his work on Igor Severyanin .

After the Second World War, Adams shifted from essay writing and literary studies, but also added new poems to his selected volumes. In 1986 he surprised the public with the essayistic novel Esta comes into being , which was praised and awarded a literary prize by critics on the one hand as “a work of art that does not even come close to being in our literature”, but also as “chaotic” and on the other the border to "triviality" was designated. The author describes Tartu life in the first half of the 20th century in a memoir-like essayistic style, mixed with digressions into the European pre-war period.
