Rein Veidemann (born October 17, 1946 in Pärnu ) is an Estonian literary scholar and writer .

Life

Rein Veidemann went to school in Pärnu and graduated from high school in 1965. He then studied Estonian literature from 1969 to 1974 at the University of Tartu . From 1974 to 1977 he was a cyclist for the Tartu University newspaper, after which he worked for three years at the Estonian Literature Museum in Tartu . From 1980 to 1983 he was a researcher at the Institute for Language and Literature of the Estonian Academy of Sciences in Tallinn . In 1984 he defended his doctoral thesis “The Soviet Estonian literary criticism 1958 to 1972” and received the title “Candidate in Philology”, which is now awarded to the Dr. phil. corresponds.

From 1983 to 1986 he was deputy editor-in-chief at Looming magazine , after which he moved to Vikerkaar magazine , where he became the founding editor. He directed the magazine that played an important role during the Singing Revolution from 1986-1989. He then switched to politics and was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the ESSR from 1990 to 1992 and of the Riigikogu from 1992 to 1995 . He then worked for three years as a ministerial advisor in the Ministry of Culture. From 1998 to 2000 he was a lecturer at Tartu University, from 2001 to 2005 full professor at the same university. He has been teaching at Tallinn University since 2005 .
