List of Senate Members of the 114th United States Congress
Each state elects two senators in the Senate of the United States . Until 1913, the senators were determined by the parliaments of the individual states . Beginning in 1913, the 17th Amendment to the American Constitution required that the senators be directly elected by the people of the respective state.
The composition of the Senate of the 114th Congress goes back to the Senate election on November 4, 2014 , in which a third of its members were newly elected or re-elected. His term of office began on January 3, 2015 and ended on January 3, 2017.
Party system
After the 2014 election, the Republican parliamentary group had 54 and the Democratic parliamentary group 46 members.
Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont does not belong to any party, but was also a member of the Democratic faction, as was Senator Angus King from Maine .
