List of Senate Members of the 115th United States Congress
Each state elects two senators in the Senate of the United States . Until 1913, the senators were determined by the parliaments of the individual states . Beginning in 1913, the 17th Amendment to the American Constitution required that the senators be directly elected by the people of the respective state.
The composition of the Senate of the 115th Congress was based on the Senate election on November 8, 2016 , in which a third of its members were newly elected or re-elected. His term of office began on January 3, 2017 and ended on January 3, 2019.
Party system
After the 2016 election, the Republican group had 52 members and the Democratic group had 48 members. The election victory of the Democrat Doug Jones in the by-election in Alabama shifted this majority ratio in favor of the Democrats and has since been 51 (R) to 49 (D).
Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont does not belong to any party, but is also a member of the Democratic Faction, as is the independent Senator Angus King from Maine .
