List of Senate Members of the 113th United States Congress
Each state elects two senators in the Senate of the United States . Until 1913, the senators were determined by the parliaments of the individual states . Beginning in 1913, the 17th Amendment to the American Constitution required that the senators be directly elected by the people of the respective state.
The composition of the Senate of the 113th Congress goes back to the Senate election on November 6, 2012 , in which a third of its members were newly elected or re-elected. His term of office begins on January 3, 2013 and ends on January 3, 2015.
Party system
After the 2012 election, the Democratic group had 53 and the Republican group 45 members.
Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont does not belong to any party, but is a member of the Democratic Faction, as is Senator Angus King from Maine .
