List of Senate Members of the 112th United States Congress

Senatorial Party Membership by State as of December 24, 2010

Each state elects two senators in the Senate of the United States . Until 1913, the senators were determined by the parliaments of the individual states . Beginning in 1913, the 17th Amendment to the American Constitution required that the senators be directly elected by the people of the respective state.

The Senate of the 112th Congress was constituted based on the November 2, 2010 election , in which a third of its members were either newly elected or confirmed in office. His term of office began on January 3, 2011 and ends on January 3, 2013.

Parties and parliamentary groups

After the 2010 election, the Democratic group had 53 and the Republican group 47 members.

Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont did not belong to any party but was a member of the Democratic Group. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut withdrew in 2007 as an independent candidate in the Senate after he had lost the internal party Democratic primary in his state, but was also a member of the Democratic Party and was also the Group of Democrats. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska lost 2010 in the code ( 'primary') of the Republican Party against Joe Miller , but ran as an independent write-in candidate and won the election as such in Alaska. She was still a member of the Republican faction.
