Each state elects two senators in the Senate of the United States . Until 1913, the senators were determined by the parliaments of the individual states . Beginning in 1913, the 17th Amendment to the American Constitution required that the senators be directly elected by the people of the respective state.

The composition of the Senate of the 116th Congress goes back to the Senate election on November 6, 2018 , in which a third of its members were newly elected or re-elected. His term of office began on January 3, 2019 and ends on January 3, 2021.

The Republican group has 53 members and the Democratic group 47 members.

Senators Bernie Sanders from Vermont and Senator Angus King from Maine do not belong to any party, but are members of the Democratic Faction.
