Hando Runnel (born November 24, 1938 in Liutsala Village, Järva County , Estonia ) is an Estonian poet and publisher.

Life and literary creation

Hando Runnel graduated from high school in Paide . He studied agricultural science at the Estonian University of Agriculture in Tartu from 1957 to 1962 , but did not graduate. From 1956 to 1966 he worked in a collective farm .

Runnel was then from 1966 to 1971 editor of the Estonian literary magazine Looming . He had mainly acquired his literary knowledge as an autodidact . He has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1969 .

Runnel has been a freelance writer since 1971. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Runnels works were allowed to appear, but some of them were not reviewed.

In 1992, shortly after Estonian regained independence, he founded the Ilmamaa publishing house in Tartu and was involved in establishing the humanities journal Akadeemia . He was awarded the prestigious Juhan Liiv Poetry Prize for his lyric work .

In addition to his work as one of the most important Estonian publishers, Hando Runnel is known as a critic and editor of the works of Kalju Lepik , Jaan Lattik , Gustav Suits and Konstantin Päts . Since 2002 he has been an honorary citizen of the city of Tartu.

Private life

Hando Runnel is married to the Estonian writer Katre Ligi (* 1953). He has five children.
