The 2017 season of the Windsurf World Cup began with the Slalom World Cup in Ulsan ( South Korea ) from May 3rd to 8th 2017 and ended with the Slalom World Cup in Nouméa , New Caledonia from November 21st to November 26th 2017.
Foil races were held for the first time as part of the World Cup . However, no world championship title has yet been awarded in this discipline, but this should happen for the 2018 season .
A new point system will apply from the 2017 season. The winner of an event no longer receives 2100 points, but 1000 points. The second no longer 2067 points, but 990 points etc. In addition, 1030 instead of 1000 points are awarded for a victory in slalom or foil events if more than three races are held in this.
Season course
Before the start of the season
In February 2017, the PWA published their provisional tour schedule. This also included an event in Marseille ( France ) that was to take place on April 7, 2017 (men's slalom competition). However, this had to be canceled a few days later because an important sponsor had dropped out and the necessary budget was not reached. Shortly before, however, it became known that there will be a tour stop in Yokosuka ( Japan ) for the first time in 24 years . Even before the tour started, three-time wave world champion Philip Köster was able to announce his comeback after a serious knee injury.
Start of the season
At the first event in Ulsan ( South Korea ) only a slalom elimination could be carried out due to the little wind, which the world champion of the previous year Sarah-Quita Offringa won. No result could be achieved for the men. At the following tour stop in Japan , a foil competition was held for the first time. The first wave competition of the season was held in Pozo Izquierdo . This was won by Philip Köster, which was completely surprising for the men, as he had only returned from a serious knee injury in February. The German camp was also able to record a surprise success with women. The young Lina Erpenstein came third behind the dominators of recent years, the Moreno Twins . A week later, at the end of July, Sarah-Quita Offringa was again world champion in freestyle, as she won the only freestyle event for women on the Costa Calma . However, she won the competition closer than ever, with only 1.2 points ahead of Maaike Huvermann from the Netherlands . In men's freestyle there was another duel between the multiple world champion Gollito Estredo and the young Amado Vrieswijk from Bonaire , which Estredo was able to win again.
End of season
After the end of the Slalom World Cup in Hvide Sande ( Denmark ), the PWA announced that Sarah-Quita Offringa was the world champion in slalom. However, this was corrected by the PWA at the beginning of November, as the new points system had not yet made a decision. At the Super Grand Slam on Sylt , three world championship decisions were made. After the PWA had to cancel the Aloha Classic on Maui at the end of September due to financing problems, the wave competitions on Sylt were the last of the season. The multiple world champions Philip Köster and Iballa Ruano Moreno were named new world champions. In freestyle, the Venezuelan Gollito Estredo was able to just defend his title against Amado Vrieswijk , who had some problems in the decisive competition due to a sail that was too small. In Nouméa ( New Caledonia ) Offringa was also able to defend her title in slalom. Furthermore, Albeau won the Slalom World Championship for the 11th time in front of the 2016 World Champion, Matteo Iachino.
