Ricardo Campello (born July 16, 1985 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Venezuelan windsurfer of Brazilian origin. At the age of 18 he became world champion in freestyle and dominated this discipline in the following years. He became freestyle world champion two more times (2004 and 2005) and invented over 30 new moves. He later switched to the wave discipline and over time became one of the best and most influential drivers. He was runner-up three times ( 2010 , 2011 and 2018 ) and was the first to try the triple loop.
biography
Campello grew up in Rio de Janeiro and started surfing there on the beach where competitions of the World Surf League were already taking place. In 1988 he moved to Isla Margarita ( Venezuela ) with his mother and stepfather , where he started windsurfing . The local windsurfing spot El Yaque is considered the Mecca of freestyle. The multiple freestyle world champion Gollito Estredo and the (former) World Cup drivers Diony Guadagnino and Douglas Diaz , as well as the former freestyle world champion Colette Guadagnino, also come from here . As a result of these influences, he took part in the Windsurf World Cup just three years later and was able to classify himself among the ten best freestyle riders in his first season. During that season he received his first professional contract from JP Australia . He was quickly seen as a “child prodigy” and became vice world champion in 2002 and world champion in the following three years.
Despite his great superiority in freestyle, from then on he concentrated on wave riding. In the 2008 season he reached the top 10 for the first time and in 2010 he was runner-up behind Víctor Fernández López . He was able to repeat this success in 2011 . Despite two more top 5 placements in the next two years, his board sponsor JP Australia and his sailing sponsor Neil Pryde parted ways with him at the beginning of 2014 after working together for 14 years. Henceforth he became a driver for the board brand Patrik and the sailing brand Point-7. Together with Patrik, Campello developed his own wave board, the “campello wave”. In the 2014 season he was able to classify himself again among the top three of the World Cup. In 2017 he announced the separation from his board sponsor Patrik and drove a season without a sponsor. In the coming year he signed another sponsorship contract with Brunotti . He came very close to his goal of becoming wave world champion in the 2018 season . At the Windsurf World Cup Sylt it looked like it at first, but he lost the super final against Thomas Traversa and thus became vice world champion just behind Víctor Fernández López.
For the 2020 season, Campello has signed with the sail and board manufacturer Naish .
Although Campello is considered a friendly driver, he invites all drivers to his birthday, which he often celebrates during the PWA event in Pozo Izquierdo , but is also a very emotional athlete. He is the driver who has been punished most often by the PWA for violating the rules and he says of himself that he is “not a good loser”.
Campello continues to live on Isla Margarita , although his favorite spots are Ponta Preta do Sul near Santa Maria ( Cape Verde ) and on Jawa Barat ( Indonesia ). His favorite move is the cutback .
