Jericoacoara

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The place Jericoacoara (short form Jeri ) is the center of an extensive dune area in northeastern Brazil . It is located on the coast of the state of Ceará . The shifting dunes extend up to 20 km inland. The temperatures range between 16 ° C and 36 ° C.

The name probably comes from the language of the Tupi who lived in the region. "Yuruco" stands for cave and "Cuara" for turtle summarized Jericoacoara means something like "cave of the turtles".

Geographical location of Jericoacoara in Ceará

In 1984 Jericoacoara and a large area around the place were declared a nature reserve "Área de proteção ambiental" (APA) and in 2002 officially a national park. The freshwater lakes in the dunes are a special attraction. A layer of clay underneath them prevents seepage.

The place can be reached either by sea with small boats or by four-wheel drive vehicles from the nearest town Jijoca. The approx. 350 km long journey from Fortaleza by car is relatively easy at first, as the roads are well developed. Only the last 28 km from Jijoca have to be tackled on unpaved sand slopes.

economy

The place Jericoacoara has had a greater importance in the tourism of the Brazilian state of Ceará since the mid-1980s . A slowly growing local infrastructure now provides tourists with accommodation, restaurants and the opportunity to go on excursions in the dune landscape. Strict building regulations prevent unbridled growth and common building sins. The area became internationally known when the Washington Post named the beach one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world in 1984.

Among windsurfers and kiters, Jericoacoara is one of the best areas in the world, as the wind “blows” more than 4 Beaufort almost every day from the end of July to the end of January . In addition to these sports, various local organizers offer activities such as guided buggy and kayak tours, capoeira , sandboarding , SUP and riding courses .
