Santa Maria is a town on the south coast of the island of Sal ( Cape Verde ), which is one of the islands over the wind . In 2005 the city had 17,231 inhabitants. Originally a fishing village, the city has become known in recent years primarily for its booming tourism and is now characterized by many new hotels.

The city is located about 20 km south of the Amílcar Cabral International Airport , which is the largest of the Cape Verde Islands.
