from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jason Polakow (born November 10, 1971 in Torquay , Australia ) is two-time world champion in windsurfing . He is considered one of the best big-wave windsurfers in the world and has had a significant influence on the development of windsurfing since the late 1990s.

biography

Polakow became Australian junior motocross champion at the age of 12 and began to learn windsurfing at the same age. In 1989 he became the Australian national champion and professional windsurfer and started in 1990 in the PWA World Tour. In the same year he reached second place in the overall wave ranking and was able to leave the long-time world champion Robby Naish behind. Based on the sail number of Naish ( US-1111 ), his role model from his youth, Polakow has used the sail number KA-1111 since the beginning of his professional career .

After observing Laird Hamilton as one of the first Stand Up Paddlers (SUP) in 2003, Polakow started doing this himself a few years later.

In 2010, Polakow withdrew from the windsurfing PWA World Tour and has since devoted himself to big-wave windsurfing and surfing and lives on Maui.

“When I was still taking part in competitions, it was always about being here and having to go there ... Today I am in places where the conditions are very challenging. Places where my skills and fitness are put to the test and where it really matters. Because if I make a mistake, I might die ... If I catch the right wave on one of my projects now, it will be the best feeling in the world. That's what I live for. "
