A sailing number is a unique identification of boats used in sailing . Sail numbers are not an official or officially recognized ship identification in Germany .

It consists of:

  • the nationality letter / national code (Germany: from 1995: GER; previously G for the FRG and until 1990 for the GDR the abbreviation GO or DDR; Austria: formerly OE / now AUT; Switzerland: SUI). Today these are all three-digit. In the case of Croatia (CR0) and Chile (CR1), it exceptionally contains a number.
  • the number that is usually consecutively assigned either by the manufacturer, the International Sailing Federation or the international or national class association . The sail number is counted accordingly nationally or internationally.

Many boat classes set for the number assignment, the build number of the ship basis, others such as Finn dinghy or FD awarded personal numbers - here are sometimes huge gaps between the numbers present.

The linguistic usage is not uniform. The sail number can either be understood as the totality of the number and nationality or just the number. The sailing mark indicating the boat class , i.e. H. the type of sailing ship, but is usually not understood as part of the sailing number.
