Ship registration
A ship identification is an alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies watercraft on German inland waterways.
Labeling requirement
According to the “Ordinance on the Marking of Small Vehicles Operating on Inland Waterways”, all ships that operate on German inland waterways and have an engine output of more than 2.21 kW must have an official or an officially recognized license plate.
The license plate must be permanently affixed in Latin script at least ten centimeters high, light on a dark background or dark on a light background on both sides of the bow , the rear or the transom of the small vehicle.
Ships which only travel on sea waterways and are no longer than 15 meters are exempt from the labeling requirement on sea waterways. Seagoing vessels that are longer than 15 meters do not need to wear a license plate; However, they must have a ship's name and the name of their home port and be registered in the ship's register under their name.
Small vehicles that are marked by flag or by a corresponding label as official or water rescue vehicles of a recognized non-profit corporation are exempt from the labeling requirement.
