Flag certificate
The flag certificate is issued for seagoing vessels with a hull length of up to 15 m and entitles them to use the federal flag . The document is an internationally recognized flag document, but no proof of ownership under German law.
The flag certificate is issued by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). It is valid for eight years and can be extended. To issue the certificate, the BSH must provide data on the ship owner, data on the ship and technical data on the ship and engine. The ownership must be proven by submitting the purchase contract.
Pleasure craft over 15 m in length, on the other hand, must be entered in the shipping register, which is kept by a number of local courts.
The number of the flag certificate with the additional letter F can also be used as an official identifier in the Federal Republic of Germany . The license plate must be stuck on or painted on both sides of the bow or on the stern of the sport boat in ten centimeter letters made of Latin script and Arabic numbers dark on a light background or light on a dark background. In addition, a ship's name and the home port must be affixed to the watercraft in the same way. A conceivable number would be 123456-F.
There are also comparable institutions in other countries. In Great Britain, for example, there is the state registration of smaller pleasure craft, the SSR - Small Ships Register.
Alternatives
On many foreign waterways - with the exception of France s. o. - The international boat license issued by the German Motor Yacht Association (DMYV), the German Sailing Association (DSV) or the ADAC applies. A pleasure craft can have several license plates at the same time. However, only one license plate may be carried on the boat.
