Robert "Robby" Staunton Naish (born April 23, 1963 in La Jolla ) is an American surfer and multiple world champion in windsurfing .

Growing up in Kailua on the Hawaiian island of Oahu , Robby Naish began surfing at the age of eight before taking up stand-up sailing at the age of eleven. In 1976, at the age of 13, he won his first world championship title at the world championships in the Bahamas , making him the youngest world champion to date.

Life

Naish was born in the La Jolla neighborhood , north of downtown San Diego . His father Rick Naish was a surfer who rode the biggest waves known at the time in Waimea Bay as early as 1959 and was featured in the first issue of "surfer" magazine. Rick has three other children with Carol Naish. Robby Naish is married and has two daughters (* 1983 and * 2007).

With the sail number US-1111 he was a total of 24 windsurfing world champion. He is considered a pioneer of windsurfing and was instrumental in the development of shorter surfboards . Further innovations were the viewing window in the sail , the foot straps and the trapeze .

He later started kite surfing and became world champion in slalom in 1998, and world champion in slalom and jumping competition the following year. In this sport, too, he has significantly influenced the further development of the material. In 2001 Naish set a new world speed record in kite surfing with 70.37 km / h (38.4 knots) off Gran Canaria . After 16 years, Naish retired from professional sport in 2001 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) on November 5, 2002 together with Jim Drake and Hoyle Schweitzer .

Robby Naish speaks very good German and is a member of the jury committee of the Laureus World Sports Awards .

After the windsurf board production had outgrown the "garage company" scale in 1979, Rick Naish founded Naish Hawaii Ltd. which initially only produced windsurf boards with Robby's know-how. In 1999 Robby Naish founded his first company "Naishsails". His companies now manufacture products and accessories for wind, kite, wing and stand up paddle surfing and are grouped under the Nalu Kai Incorporated .

In 2013 Naish, now 50 years old, who deliberately did not celebrate his milestone birthday, announced a short comeback on the professional tour on the sidelines of the 30th Windsurf World Cup Sylt . After a 12-year break in his home town of Maui, he started the Aloha Classic 2013 PWA Tour competition in Ho'okipa with a wildcard and reached a shared 17th place with a total of 32 participants. At the Aloha Classic 2014, Naish reached 7th place out of 29 participants after double elimination and in 2015 11th place out of 48 participants. In May 2016 Naish broke his pelvis while kitesurfing , but was able to take part in the Aloha Classic 2016 in November. With Jason Polakow he reached the shared 17th place out of 48 participants.
