Philip Köster (born March 5, 1994 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ) is the first German windsurfing world champion in the "surfing" discipline. He uses the sail number G-44 .

Life

In 1980 his parents, who come from Hamburg , moved to Playa de Vargas on Gran Canaria , where they opened a surf school. Köster grew up less than 100 meters from the sea. He started windsurfing at the age of eight. In September 2016, Köster suffered a torn cruciate ligament , torn inner ligament and a meniscus damage in his right knee during training . With 4101 points and 99 points behind the leader in second place in the overall ranking of the PWA Tour, a title defense was impossible. Köster has been the father of a daughter since February 2020.

successes

Philip Köster was twice Canary Islands champion over 50 meters butterfly before he concentrated on windsurfing.

In 2005 he was Canarian champion in the windsurfing discipline surfing (wave riding). Both jumps over the waves and riding the waves are assessed by the judges. In 2006 he made his first PWA - World Cup . The PWA voted Köster 2008 Rookie of the Year . In 2009 he finished school and became a professional windsurfer. In the same year Köster won his first World Cup and with 18 meters he made the highest jump in windsurfing history.

In 2009 and 2010 he was named “Surfer of the Year” by surf magazine . In 2010 he reached third place in the surfing discipline in the PWA world championship.

In 2011, at the age of 17, Köster became the windsurfing world champion in the “wave riding” discipline, making it the second youngest champion after Robby Naish . In September of the same year he was able to win the penultimate World Cup of the season in Klitmøller , Denmark , and was thus unmatched in first place at the Windsurf World Cup Sylt even before the end of the season . He was able to defend the title in 2012, also at the PWA Wave World Cup Klitmøller. Köster subsequently also won the Windsurf World Cup Sylt 2012. After two years of injuries, Köster won his third world title in 2015 at the last event of the tour in Ho'okipa . A good 12 months after a serious injury, he made his comeback to the world's top professional windsurfers in 2017 with the 4th World Cup title .
