from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Playa de Vargas is a beach on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria . The beach is located on a 4 km long bay on the east coast between Arinaga in the south and Carrizal in the north. Politically, Playa de Vargas belongs to the municipality of Agüimes located in the mountains .

In the summer months, the beach is one of the most wind-safe surf spots in the world and even outshines the more well-known PWA World Cup spot Pozo Izquierdo , which is located further south . Until 2004, the PWA World Cup also took place here at Easter. The beach consists of large, black, round stones, but it quickly becomes sandy, so that at low tide it is even possible to enter via sand. Due to the unusually strong winds and the high surf on strong days, Playa de Vargas is only recommended for experienced windsurfers. In the vicinity of the beach, the northeast trade wind is often gusty due to the windward mountain. The multiple PWA windsurfing world champion Philip Köster has lived here since he was a child and learned his sport here.
