The city is located 11 km southwest of Hanstholm and 18 km northwest of Thisted . The small fishing village has developed into a tourist capital since the 1980s: Strong westerly winds and constant surf waves offer optimal conditions for surfers . Today Klitmøller is one of the most famous surfing areas in Europe and is marketed under the name "Cold Hawaii".
tourism
The surfing paradise of Klitmøller has hosted the Danish windsurfing championships since the 1990s . The European Championships have also taken place here several times, including 1996, 1998 and 2010. Kitesurfing is also popular, but during the breeding season it can only be practiced outside of the protected areas. Klitmøller is also the venue for the Professional Windsurfers Association World Tour .
There are various types of accommodation in Klitmøller: campsites, holiday homes, hotels. Some recruitment agencies are also located on site. Most of the restaurants and cafes are only open in summer. There is also a surf school and a riding stables. The annual summer festival takes place on the first weekend in June.
Trade and fishing
Klitmøller gained importance between 1660 and 1810 through the trade in goods with the Norwegian coast, which is only 110 kilometers away. Flat-built transport ships (e.g. sword boats with flat underwater hulls) could land on the sandy beach. Grain and food were exported, especially wood was imported. A storm surge in 1825 created a connection between the North Sea and the Limfjord near Agger Tange , so that the Klitmøller trading center lost its preferred location.
From 1847 to 1979 there was a sea rescue station on site .
Fishing was commercial until 1967. The fishing trawlers were pulled onto the beach with a winch. Today the decommissioned 12 meter long Bellis T97 cutter is a reminder of that time. In 1967 the boats were moved to the new port of Hanstholm. Since then, fishing in Klitmøller has only been a sideline.
Flora and fauna
In the dunes you will find the typical plant communities of sea rye , sea thistle , heather plants , black crowberry . Wood sandpipers and cranes breed here. The village of Klitmøller is surrounded by the Thy National Park (established in 2007). Inland are the lakes Vandet Sø and Nors Sø .
