The National Park Thy is Denmark's oldest national park . It was placed under protection in 2007 and officially inaugurated on August 22, 2008. The park is located in the Danish region of Nordjylland on the island of Vendsyssel-Thy , covers 24,370 hectares and extends over a width of up to 12 km from Agger Tange in the south to Hanstholm in the north.
nature and landscape
The western part of Thy was shaped by sand drift for centuries . Today, behind the beach sections, there are dune landscapes , coastal heaths and forests that were planted to stop the sand drifts.
The largest dune heaths in the national park can be found in the game reserve Hanstholm, in Vangså and Ålvand and between Stenbjerg and Lodbjerg. Large stocks of red deer can be found here. There are also more than 200 larger and smaller lakes here, many of which are nutrient-poor clear water lakes with a sandy bottom and have corresponding characteristic plant species, e.g. B. water lobelia , bream , strandling and common pill fern .
In Hanstholm there is a game reserve where more than 30 different species of birds breed. a. the golden plover , the sandpiper , the marsh harrier , the short-eared owl and the crane . The otter has also found a suitable habitat on the lakes of the reserve.

Agger Tange in the southern part of the national park is one of the most important resting places in Northern Europe for numerous water birds. The breeding birds in this area include u. a. the mute swan , the shelduck , the pintail and the coot , the oystercatcher , the lapwing , the redshank , the ruff and the godwit .
The national park is thus an international bird sanctuary and is subject to the protection of the Ramsar Convention , the European Birds Directive and the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive .
In October 2012, the first wolf in Denmark for almost 200 years was detected in a photograph in Thy National Park . In November 2012, this animal was found dead. The autopsy found a tumor in the neck area of the male wolf. As a result, he starved to death. Genetic studies have shown that the wolf comes from a Saxon wolf pack (so-called Milkeler pack, named after the village of Milkel in its territory), where it was probably born in 2009. The distance between his birthplace and Thy National Park is about 720 km as the crow flies.
tourism
The historic rescue route leads from south to north through the area, which is now used as a hiking trail. It used to be used by the rescue teams to bring their equipment to the rescue of shipwrecked people. The old rescue station in Lyngby can be used by hikers to stay overnight. A museum about the rescue service has been set up in the rescue station in Stenbjerg
history
Numerous burial mounds from the Bronze Age attest to the long history of settlement in the area. Many bunker ruins along the coast are a reminder of the occupation of Denmark by German troops in World War II.
