Hanstholm is a place in the Danish municipality of Thisted in the Nordjylland region , located in northwest Jutland on the Skagerrak . The village has 2,136 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geology

The Hanstholm area is of particular geological interest. The subsoil in the immediate vicinity consists of fine-grained Cretaceous limestone , which initially merges into similar limestone deposits of the Danium (Lower Paleogene ; former name: Tertiary ). The continued sedimentation of fine-grained limestone at the beginning of the Danium is due to the location of Thy along the then sea coast. For the same reason, perhaps the most complete transitions from the Cretaceous to the Tertiary that are known to exist in profiles in the Hanstholm area (as far as Hjardemål) are preserved.

This so-called chalk-tertiary border is open in several places along the northern rim of limestone hills from Hanstholm via Hjardemål to Kløv, namely in Bjerre, Kjølby Gård and Nye Kløv. In all these places, this border is characterized by a thin layer of marl , which stands out from the surrounding limestone due to its darker color.

history

At the time of the German occupation in World War II , a centerpiece of the Atlantic Wall was built here from 1940 , of which many remains testify to this day. The Hanstholm fortress and its sister system in Kristiansand, Norway , the “Vara” battery, were supposed to prevent Allied shipping traffic in the Skagerrak and prevent access to the Baltic Sea . The German occupiers had a total of 455 bunkers built on 9 square kilometers in the dunes around Hanstholm  .

From 1970 to 2007 the place was part of the official municipality of Viborg .

Economy and Transport

Hanstholm Havn , the port of Hanstholm

The Danish Railway Act of March 31, 1917 provided for a Nors – Hanstholm railway line . In Nors there would have been a connection to the Thisted – Fjerritslev railway line . However, this sub-project was not implemented. The possibility of a direct state railway line to Hanstholm by extending the line from Fjerritslev by bypassing Thisted was also examined. During the German occupation in Denmark there were plans to build a narrow-gauge railway Nors – Hanstholm to transport material to the large fortifications of the Wehrmacht in Hanstholm. Ultimately, a concrete road was built for it.

In 1920 difficulties arose in the construction of the port, so that the entire project largely came to a standstill. Hanstholm has had a modern seaport only since 1967 , today Denmark's largest fishing port , measured in terms of the amount of fish landed. From June 2018 to August 2020, the port was expanded with new jetties, quays and an industrial and commercial area.

The ferry service to the Faroe Islands and Iceland was relocated to the port of Hirtshals further north in October 2010 . Until then, the Norröna car ferry had connected the city with Tórshavn and Seyðisfjörður . Until 2008, a catamaran ferry operated a connection to Kristiansand, Norway .

Culture and sights

Hanstholmer Church

The history of the German bunker systems has been presented and processed in the Hanstholm Museum Center since 2002 . In this war and military museum , in addition to the permanent exhibition, several large bunkers with underground living quarters and a roadworthy field railway (former ammunition train) can be visited.

A few nautical miles from Hanstholm is the Yellow Reef deep-sea fishing area .

Trivia

In 1971, outdoor shots for the film The Olsen Gang goes to Jutland were filmed in Hanstholm and the surrounding area.
