El Médano ( Spanish for the sand dune ) is a district of the municipality of Granadilla de Abona on the Canary Island of Tenerife , which belongs to the Spanish province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife . It has 7,478 inhabitants (as of 2011). The place is located in a small bay on the southeast coast a few kilometers east of Tenerife South Airport . La Montaña Roja ("The Red Mountain") rises to the south , the eroded remnant of an old cinder cone that is under nature protection. From the top of this elevation you can see El Médano and part of the surrounding area. Playa La Tejita is located west of El Médano .

Due to the strong and constant winds, El Médano is a popular holiday destination for windsurfers . Water sports enthusiasts will find training conditions for all skill levels at three spots . Also kite surfing dominates the picture on the beach and on the water from wind force four.

Nearby, directly east of the runway of the south airport (Aeropuerto Reina Sofía), is the Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro (Cave of the Holy Brother Pedro). The place of pilgrimage commemorates Pedro de San José de Betancur, known as Hermano Pedro. He is the first person born in the Canary Islands to be canonized. He is also considered the first saint in Guatemala and Central America.
