Playa La Tejita

Playa La Tejita with the Montaña Roja

La Tejita beach is located west of El Médano at the foot of Montaña Roja just south of Tenerife South Airport and belongs to the municipality of Granadilla de Abona .

It is one of the largest natural sandy beaches in Tenerife and owes its existence to the steady northeast trade wind that blows against the Montaña Roja and sheds sand. Further to the west are the beaches of Playa del Confital and Playa de los Abrigos . There is an old cable house on the beach at La Tejita. A telegraph cable ran from this 19th century building on the sea floor to Saint-Louis in Senegal, Africa. The playa is ideal for long walks, it is also not as crowded as some other beaches, e.g. B. at Los Cristianos . The sometimes high waves offer good conditions for surfers, but can be dangerous for bathers, especially children.

Except for a few wooden huts, the beach has not yet been developed and can only be reached on foot from the TF-643 road. A citizens' initiative called “Salvar La Tejita” has been fighting against the planned construction of the five-star hotel “Tejita Beach Club Resort” on the beach for years. In the meantime, the protests are directed against the illegal work to build the hotel.
