Lewis Kahn
"Voirabh" Lewis Kahn (born July 1, 1946 in Los Angeles ; † February 20, 2019 in New York ) was an American salsa and jazz musician ( violin , trombone ) who was active in the New York music scene.
Live and act
Kahn first learned to play the violin; later he played the trombone in the high school band. As a young adult, he moved to New York, where he studied at the Juilliard School . Soon he became part of the Latin music scene, as well as the early boogaloo style and salsa. His nicknames "El otro judio maravilloso" and "second marvelous Jew" made appreciative reference to his Jewish origins, at the same time to the salsa musician Larry Harlow (called "first marvelous Jew"), with whom Kahn often worked. He received the suffix "Voirabh" from his meditation teacher Sri Chinmoy .
Kahn's first recordings were made in 1969 by Eddie Palmieri ( Justicia ); in the early 1970s he played the trombone with Tito Puente and in 1975 with Dizzy Gillespie and Machito , heard on the album Afro Cuban Jazz Moods . In the course of his further career he worked - mostly as a trombonist - a. a. with Carlos Jiménez , Celia Cruz , Chico O'Farrill , David Byrne , the Fania All-Stars , Grover Washington Jr. , Janis Ian , Juan-Carlos Formell , Lionel Hampton , Marc Anthony , Obie Bermúdez , the Harlow Orchestra, Rubén Blades , Stan Kenton , Willie Colón , Kristy MacColl and Bobby Sanabria , as violinists also with Yomo Toro ( Funky Jibaro ). In the field of jazz, he was involved in 25 recording sessions between 1969 and 2008, most recently with Yoland Duke and the Tito Puente Orchestra.
