Willie Colón (born April 28, 1950 in New York City , New York , United States ) is a Puerto Rican-American salsa musician and producer.

Life

Colón signed with Fania when he was 15 and released his first album when he was 17. There he worked as a trombonist and supporting singer with musicians such as singers Héctor Lavoe , Celia Cruz , Rubén Blades and percussionist Ray Barretto . He had a close friendship with Héctor Lavoe, whom he had accepted into his own orchestra. After a temporary professional separation - partly because of Lavoe's drug addiction - they played together again. After Lavoe's death, Colón took over the singing himself. One of his albums, Siembra - a co-production with Blades - was the most successful salsa record of all time for a long time until it was replaced by Jerry Rivera .
