William Henry Miller

William Henry Miller (born February 28, 1829 in Landisburg , Perry County , Pennsylvania , † September 12, 1870 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1865 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Miller was the son of Congressman Jesse Miller (1800–1850). He attended public schools in his home country and a private school in Harrisburg. He then studied at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1846, he began to work in this profession in Harrisburg. From 1849 to 1854 he lived and practiced in New Bloomfield . He then returned to Harrisburg. From 1854 to 1863 he was employed by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania . In 1858 and 1859 he also served in the administration of the Senate of Pennsylvania . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1862 Miller was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Galusha A. Grow on March 4, 1863 . Since he was not confirmed in 1864, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1865 . This was shaped by the events of the civil war .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, William Miller practiced as a lawyer again. He also worked as a journalist. He died on September 12, 1870 in Harrisburg, where he was also buried.
