Louis Arthur Watres

Louis Arthur Watres (born April 21, 1851 in Blakely , Lackawanna County , Pennsylvania , †  June 28, 1937 ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania.

Career

After studying law and being admitted to the bar, Louis Watres began working in this profession. Between 1881 and 1890 he served as the district attorney in Lackawanna County. He was also a member of the national guard of his state from 1877 to 1890. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1883 and 1890 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate . At times he was also the editor of the Scranton Republican newspaper .

In 1890, Watres was elected Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania alongside Robert Emory Pattison . He held this office between 1891 and 1895. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In June 1916 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago . He was also a member of the Freemasons and President of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania in 1916 and 1917 . Louis Watres died on June 28, 1937. His son Laurence (1882–1964) became a member of the United States House of Representatives .
