Catherine Baker Knoll (born September 3, 1930 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , †  November 12, 2008 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . She was lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania from 2003 to 2008 .

Career

Catherine Baker, her maiden name, graduated from Duquesne University in 1952 . Later she studied at the Harvard University belonging Kennedy School of Government and at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania . Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . She began her political career as a member of the campaign teams for various democratic candidates for local or state-wide offices. This included the Milton Shapp gubernatorial campaign . After his election victory in 1970, she got a job in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Between 1989 and 1997 she was Finance Minister there. In 1976 and 1984 she had applied unsuccessfully for this post.

In 2002, Knoll was elected Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania alongside Ed Rendell . She held this office after being re-elected in 2006 between 2003 and her death on November 12, 2008. She was Deputy Governor and Chairwoman of the State Senate . Catherine Baker Knoll was the first woman to hold this position in Pennsylvania. She died of cancer in Washington. Her successor in the office of lieutenant governor was the President Pro Tempore of the State Senate, Joseph B. Scarnati . Knoll had been married to the restorer and hotelier Charles Knoll since 1952, who later also became a post office owner in their homeland. With her husband, who died in 1987, she had three sons and a daughter.
