Juliana Stratton, current Lieutenant Governor of Illinois

The office of Lieutenant Governor of Illinois ( Lieutenant Governor of Illinois ) was in the course of the transformation of the territory to a state of the United States created. The lieutenant governor is elected as the governor's running mate along with the governor. Until the constitutional amendment in 1970, both offices were determined in separate elections. As a result, the lieutenant governor and governor of Illinois came from different parties three times . Only Paul M. Simon was elected by the opposing party.

The vice-governorship was, as in other states in the US also, multiple vacant for the time when the incumbent resigned himself early from the office or had to take over the succession of early retiring governor, which either last until 2009 by the current Governor Pat Quinn happened to the moved up to the governorship. Since the state constitution provides for the office to be filled only through popular elections, the office of vice governor could not be refilled subsequently. Early elections , such as in countries and states with a parliamentary system of government , are excluded in the United States at both the federal and most state levels. In the case of Pat Quinn, the vacant post of deputy head of state could only take place after the gubernatorial election in November 2010.
