Joseph Wells (politician)

Joseph B. Wells was an American politician . Between 1846 and 1849 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois .

Career

The sources on Joseph Wells are extremely poor. His life data have not been passed down. There is also no information in the sources about his place of birth or death. It is known that he studied law with Cadwallader C. Washburn in 1839 . From this one can deduce a date of birth at the beginning of the 19th century. He may then have practiced as a lawyer. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In 1846 Wells was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois alongside Augustus French . He held this office between December 9, 1846 and January 8, 1849. He was Deputy Governor . During his tenure, a new constitution was passed in 1848, setting the governor and lieutenant governor's terms of office to begin on the second Monday in January following the election the previous November. After his tenure, Wells' track is lost again.
