John G. Oglesby

John Gillett Oglesby (born March 19, 1878 in Decatur , Illinois , †  May 26, 1938 in Elkhart , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1909 and 1913 and again from 1917 to 1921 he was Vice Governor of the State of Illinois.

Career

John Oglesby was the son of Governor Richard James Oglesby (1824-1899). Nothing is known about his youth and school education. He took the soldier as US Army at the Spanish-American War of 1898, in part. Professionally, he worked in the steel industry and as a farmer. Politically, like his father, he was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1905 and 1907 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives .

In 1908, Oglesby was elected lieutenant governor of Illinois alongside Charles S. Deneen . He held this office between January 18, 1909 and February 3, 1913. In 1912 he lost in the primary elections of his party to Barratt O'Hara . Four years later he was re-elected lieutenant governor of his state. His second term was between January 8, 1917 and January 10, 1921. This time he served under Governor Frank Orren Lowden . During his eight years as Lieutenant Governor, he was Deputy Governor.

Between 1920 and 1932 Oglesby took part as a delegate at all Republican National Conventions . In 1920 he failed in his party's gubernatorial election. In 1933 he was a member of the delegation that ratified the 21st Amendment for Illinois . He died on May 26, 1938 near Elkhart, where he was also buried.
