John Dougherty (politician, 1801)

John Dougherty (born August 1, 1801 in Marietta , Ohio , †  September 2, 1879 in Jonesboro , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1873 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois.

Career

In 1811, John Dougherty and his parents came to what would later become the state of Illinois. For a few years he worked as a hat maker. After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He also held various local offices. Politically, he was initially a member of the Democratic Party . He sat in the Illinois Senate and served intermittently as a district judge. In 1860 he attended the Democratic National Convention in Charleston , which could not settle on a presidential candidate. Dougherty now got into the internal tension of his party in the run-up to the civil war . Soon after, he switched to the Republicans . In the years 1864 and 1872 he was elector in the corresponding presidential elections.

In 1868 Dougherty was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois at the side of John M. Palmer . He held this office between January 11, 1869 and January 13, 1873. He was Deputy Governor . He died in Jonesboro on September 2, 1879. With his wife Catherine (1807-1882) he had three children.
