William Northcott

William Allen Northcott (born January 28, 1854 in Murfreesboro , Tennessee , †  January 25, 1917 in Excelsior Springs , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1905 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois .

Career

After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He lived in Springfield , at least temporarily . Between 1882 and 1892 he was a district attorney in Bond County . Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In 1896, Northcott was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois alongside John Riley Tanner . He held this office after a re-election between January 11, 1897 and January 9, 1905. He was Deputy Governor . From 1901 he served under the new governor Richard Yates . In 1904 he was a substitute delegate to the Republican National Convention , at which President Theodore Roosevelt was nominated for re-election. Between 1905 and 1914, William Northcott was a federal attorney for the Eastern District of Illinois. He died on January 25, 1917 while on a spa stay in Excelsior Springs and was buried in Springfield.

His younger brother, Elliott, was a federal judge and US envoy to several states.
