Lyman Ray

Lyman Beecher Ray (born August 17, 1831 in Hinesburg , Vermont , † August 22, 1916 in Joliet , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1893 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois.

Career

Lyman Ray grew up on a Vermont farm and attended public schools in his homeland. He then graduated from the New England Academy . He then worked in trade in his home country. In 1852 he came to Kane County , Illinois, where he was employed in a department store until 1855. Then he moved to Morris , where he opened his own department store, which he ran until 1888. Politically, Ray was one of the founders of the Republican Party in Grundy County . In 1872 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms there. In 1882 he entered the State Senate .

In 1888, Ray was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, alongside Joseph W. Fifer . He held this office between January 14, 1889 and January 10, 1893. He was Deputy Governor . He spent his old age in Joliet. He had a daughter with his wife Julia, née Reading, who died in 1912.
