William McMurtry

William McMurtry (born February 20, 1801 in Mercer County , Kentucky , †  April 10, 1875 in Henderson , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1853 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois.

Career

Nothing is known about William McMurtry's youth and schooling. Between 1818 and 1829 he lived in Crawford County , Indiana . Then he moved to Knox County , Illinois. Professionally he was a farmer. During the Black Hawk War he raised a force of 70 to 90 men, which he himself commanded as a captain. Politically, McMurtry joined the Democratic Party . Between 1836 and 1840 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives ; from 1842 to 1849 he was a member of the State Senate .

In 1848, McMurtry was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois at the side of Augustus French . He held this office between January 8, 1849 and January 10, 1853. He was Deputy Governor . In 1854 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives . When the civil war broke out , he set up the 102nd Illinois Infantry Regiment , which he himself commanded as a colonel for a few months. Then he had to quit military service for health reasons. He died in Henderson on April 10, 1875.
